Anyway, received an email overnight from Sipgate, saying that my attempt to 'create a credit card' had failed.
Tried again this morning, and success !
Next issue, made a test call to my mobile (only really to check CLID was being sent) and it carried on ringing the mobile long (20 seconds) after I hung up. Result, the mobile voicemail answered and ker-ching, 14p gone
Not to worry, I don't intend to be making any calls with it, only answering.
