Voipfone porting in is free these days. It's horses for courses with them; the residential service is not always the right fit for a private user especially if you like the idea of being able to receive incoming calls simultaneously on both your DV phone and the soft app on your mobile.

If you can live within the constraints of the residential service, it offers great value for money and a really simple portal for access to subscribed facilities.

TBH I only use them occasionally as I still have some credit on my account. For my inbound calls I use A&A who I rent from.

Never had any issues with either tbh, but I don't use the landline that much as I have a mobile. I only keep the number for my mother to call.

Where the softphone facility on the Voipfone system comes into its own, is when travelling abroad. You are still able to receive incoming calls on an 01 number, at no cost to either party, and to make calls back to the UK for less than 2ppm. You have to think about time differences though!

Tried and tested by me when on my world cruise. Works just great.

I do similar with Acrobits app on my smartphone connected to my AAISP account. Works across the UK various hotels and strange WiFi and works in many states of the USA… 😁

We were making and receiving’ ‘UK landline’ calls whilst on a boat 2 hours off the Queensland coast. Courtesy of Acrobits and Starlink.

The boat (with Starlink) actually had better quality internet (400 Mbps down / 23 Mbps up and 23ms ping) than many of the hotels and B&Bs I’ve stayed at in the UK.

I've just ported my 'cherished number' from TTB to A&A.
In my case the 'landline' number is only there to allow incoming calls from rellies who refuse to ring a mobile number, and contacts who might only have the old landline number.
I am using 'GSWave (lite?)' app on my mobile at present, which I've had on my phone for couple of years with a Sipgate number, not sure if I'll bother with a 'home phone'.
Contacted A&A on 20th august for a quick chat to ensure that they could port the number from TTB and it was not likely to be mixed up with my TTR internet, I was reassured by a operator who seemed fully aware of all the procedures. Set up the DD and set things in motion, as TTB was not listed on the drop down list it could not be a 'one touch switch' (or what ever they call it). The next day got email confirming port was accepted and would be done on 2nd Sept.
Set up passwords etc on A&A's website ready for change.
Today (2nd of sept) got email at 11am to say port was complete. On getting home picked up home phone to hear dialing tone, phoned number from mobile to message of "you have phoned wrong number" which confirmed TTB line was disconnected, so followed A&A instructions for setting up GSWave and within a minute was shown as active, phoned number from gf's mobile and all's good.
This is all about the most simple set up, and preserving a number at a low price,

Good to know, this is exactly what I am planning to do when the time comes. My fibre isn't due to go live until the 10th Sept. I was told I can cancel my TTB line from September with no fee but I take that with a pinch of salt. They also said they would email my current contract to me which hasn't turned up either.
