Wordpress

I'm currently looking into redeveloping my employers website and was thinking about using wordpress as a cms. I've setup a test install on my laptop and addwd a few pages which is working well.
What I want now is on my homepage to have an "emergency news" box then if a post is added to the news section in the "emergency" category it displays as a link in this box on the homepage, that way someone visiting the site will see this straight away, then they can click on it to be taken to the entry for all the information.
I have an idea of how to do this with just php and mysql (on a standalone db) but obviously this has all been pre-created by the good people at wordpress.

I've used WP myself for many things, once you ditch the default theme and create your own you can make it do anything. I currently use it as a CMS driving over 2500 static pages that are nested up to a dozen levels. The PageMash plugin is ace for this

If you're handy with MySQL and PHP you can write some simple plugins to provide a lot of additional functionality. I could rave about WP for hours, I loves it I does
