Email and Website at Different Servers?

[link to this post]

Hi,

I've a domain registered at 123-reg and currently point the nameserver to the website hosting server. This sends all email and webtraffic to the right place. Now, I want to keep the email on the current server and move only the website to a different server. How do I acheive this? Can anyone help please. Fingers crossed and many thanks

You either need to do:

- Change the MX on the new nameservers to point where you want the mail to go
or
- Point the www and . records (via A record) to your new hoster, the mail would remain where it is.

As uno said change the mx entry. You can either do this at the registar's control panel or at your webserver's one (cpanel for instance offers you to change the mail settings).

Don't forget to change the TTL values to something low (say, 10 minutes) days before you start to change things.

Then if you make a mistake, it will only take 10 minutes to put it all right again. (and your changes will all take effect within 10 minutes).

You can put the TTL back to a normal value when everything is complete.

Are you aware of DNSreport.com?

Sandgrounder did suggest that, just easy to miss.

If you re-read it as "Dont forget to chage the TTL values to something low (say, 10 minutes) a few days before you start"
