Web hosting / email provider

[link to this post]

Well the time has come to leave plusnet due to increase in prices, dwindling services and better offers from Altnets, can you recommend a hosting / email provider for just a single page website and email?

I was considering hosting it on a Synology NAS drive, any thoughts?

Thanks

For security reasons I’d definitely not recommend doing that. It’s likely that your Mail will be rejected by other servers. As to a recommended host, I’ve been with UK Hosting for a number of years and am pleased with their service.
PS I am a participant in a reseller scheme that works out at £80 a year. PM me if you want details.

Sounds reasonable considering it's only one web page.

For e-mail, sending directly from an ISP IP address will not be good as previously mentioned. You can use a free smarthost like Sendgrid.

Have a look at Ecohosting. https://www.ecohosting.co.uk/ Have been transferring hosting to them over the last few months. Very impressed so far.

I was with TSOhost who were excellent until Go Daddy got involved.

Cheers!

No included SSL Certificate on Cloud Tier 1. Disappointing to see in 2023.

When I look at their site Cloud Tier 1 for £3.50 per month says an SSL Cert is included.

Looks like an old page. If you click through to order it quotes £3.00 which is the price listed on the homepage without SSL.

Hmm, I just went to the home page, clicked on "Web Hosting" at the top and then "Cloud Hosting". If their main page about Cloud Hosting linked to the home page is out of date then that isn't great for their web presence.

EDIT : When placing the order it does change it. So, looks like their main page on cloud hosting is wrong - not good for a web company.

It looks like the main page is right, the cost is £3.00 when clicking order, which is what the main page says. And no SSL.

Edit: oh, you meant https://www.ecohosting.co.uk/hosting.html is wrong. I agree.

Oliver.

I hadn't scrolled down the home page as I went to the navigation on hosting. So, their home page where they highlight some products is indeed correct but their page you have linked that actually is specifically about cloud hosting is wrong. I expect better of technology companies so someone has dropped the ball on making sure their product pages are correct.

I've just seen this exchange between you and Oliver about SSL. But on their Home Page it says "FREE SSL Certificates". The implication to me being that they are free on at least any single website hosted by them on that domain.

I'm quite a tyro at this level as I've only ever dealt with that level of SSL. Google hasn't helped me though it talks about various types including multi-domain. The whole thing using google swallows me up in a morass of verbiage without any explanation of the topic as a whole.

My own domain+forum on IONOS does have SSL and IIRC that is a free single one.

Help please smile. This Ecohosting does indeed look interesting.

Scroll down to the £3 Nano package and it says "Discounted SSL Certs", i.e. not free.

As I said previously, disappointing in 2023, even more disappointing in 2024!

Thanks smile.

I need to get the one to IONOS but a busy week and a half before I expect to look at Ecohosting et al for the rest.
