new webspace

hi

i have just rented(?) some webspace from here .

i have a domain name hosted by 1and1. do i have to transfer my domain name to the new host, or is there some way of leaving it at 1and1 and pointing my webspace to my domain name?

please, keep it simple (if poss) as this is my first venture into creating a website.

not sure on how 1 and 1 does it but most domain hosts allow redirection of the domain to an ip address/web address using a type of transparent dns.

A 1 & 1 user should be able to confirm it

Find out what the name servers are for the new host and then set your domain to these accordingly, then park the domain with the new host. The other alternative is to 'forward' the domain to the new host which is ok if your not too worried about google etc.

If you have not done this before have a good read of the faq's and find out what the tech support is like BEFORE you do anything.

When I had my 1&1 account there was the option to select the destination of the domain, If you have been supplied with a temporary domain for your hosting you can use that....read how to Here

thanks everyone, done it. it turns out it was quite easy, even for me, a complete website novice. no doubt i will be back here when i get stuck, again!

hi again.

i now have a home page created with frontpage (coz thats all i've got) and a forum page (thanks yabb and computeractive). i would now like to try and add a picture gallery page where visitors can upload their pictures onto it. after a search on google i found this site. after having a quick read i think this looks like it might do what i want it to do, but, it looks bliidy complicated!! do you think it is a bit heavy for a total web builder newbie or does anyone know of a simpler program that will do the job?

just a reminder, please keep it very, very simple.

Depends on how much time your prepared to put into learning it. Otherwise fine for newbies. Also have a look at Coppermine which is a popular OS offering. Check out http://www.opensourcecms.com as well for other alternatives. Most open source CMS require your webserver to run Apache, MySQL, PHP
