How to control multiple developers of a site

[link to this post]

I have a site that has 3 developers. All have home computers. We want to be able to implement some sort of Source Code Control.

As we don't share a network, what can we do to implement such a thing? I have looked at Subversion, but that needs somewhere to put a repository.

What do other people do?

Setup a vpn on your webserver and keep the repo on there?

It's difficult to see how you're going to get proper control without some form of communication between the machines. You'll have to set up a server somewhere to host the database, but it doesn't have to be anything heavy. I use an old LinkStation as a Subversion server (amongst other things) and it's fine for the job.

As suggested, you could set up your Web Server as the Subversion server, or do you not have that degree of control over it?

You don't need VPN. An on-line repository will do the trick. Many web hosting companies support Subversion. If yours doesn't, find another.

P.S. I use WebFaction. They allow you to create as many on-line applications and web sites as you like, subject to the usual constraints. I recommend them.

We recommend Subversion or CVS, both of them are to be hosted on server and are accessable via the internet using clients. Ask your webhosting company whether they allow this, most do, if not I'd recommend Hosgator.

As an aside, I should warn you that controlling software developers is like trying to herd cats, but you probably already know that.

What makes it even worse is that I am one of them!
