Domain up for renewal

[link to this post]

Hi smile

My domain is currently registered via 123 reg. It is up for rnewal in April and I want to (if possible) get as far away from 123 reg as is possible. My problem is, I dont know how to do this.

Can anyone shed any light on how I go about renewing my domain but not with 123 reg please?

I use Dream Hosting to host my site so should I speak to them?
TIA
Helan

for a co.uk domain
- call your new provider of choice, agree on a service plan and ask them for their IPS tag
- log into 123-reg website
- choose domain, click modify
- click change IPS tag and enter what your new provider gave you (this has to be exactly as they tell you!!!)
- Wait an hour or so and then call the new provider and tell them that you have changed the IPS tag to theirs and that they should setup service now

I am not sure how com works on 123-reg, but there should be a release for transfer button in the modify domain menu, allowing you to unlock the domain to move it away.

Hope this helps!

I manage a dozen or so accounts, on behalf of customers. All registered with 123-reg, with which I never had an issue. What problems have you encountered with them?

Kind Regards

Malte

Hi smile

Thank you for the detailed reply. That's great. smile

I contacted dream hosting who gave me the ISP tag details this morning. I'll change it through 123 reg control panel now.

It's a very long story, I had a nightmare with 123 reg a few years back and it's left a nasty taste in my mouth. Dont want to do business with them. Was waiting for my renewal date to come up so I could stop dealing with them.

Thanks very much for your help, much appreciated smile

Sorry to hear that. I always thought 123-reg as being on of the more customer friendly service providers.
In the past I have had some bad experience with some providers charging release fees for moving domain names away from them.

For the future remember that you can move a domain name at any time, without loosing the already paid subscription.
This obviously doesn't apply to email/hosting packages.

Once you have extended a domain by 2 years you can't loose that subscription, regardless of how often you move it.

Kind Regards

Malte

Thanks, I'll remember that smile

What do you mean lose the subscription? If my subscription expired and I didn't renew it surely I would lose the domain name? Not that anybody else would want it though wink

Yes, if the domain lapses it will become available again for others to register.

I assumed you meant that if you have bought a domain name for x years it will remain yours for x years regardless of how many times you move between registrars in those x years.
