a good web hosting company?

I want to start a personal web site. Anyone got any links to genuine independent reviews of web hosting companies?

Not a review site - but decidated forum - webhostingtalk.com

I use NetHosted and no complaints

Make sure that your domain name is registered in your name, not the hosting company's.

Better, still. - register it yourself.

I'd echo that, it's probably best to decouple yourself from the web hoster as far as possible as it makes it easier to move to a new host. In a similar vein it's probably best to decouple your e-mail address from your ISP.

i use www.dream-hosting.co.uk

UK based, pretty speedy correspondance when you need help. Seems to be a smallish outfit (see the same names time and again on any support tickets i've raised). Fairly cheap prices too. £10/year to start.

Used them for a few years and never had any problems with them. They do need to update their website though to something more modern and professional looking...but don't worry about that...the hosting is fine.

Thanks for all your comments everyone. Much appreciated.

I eventually settled for tsohost, their simplest package suits my needs, easy to upgrade and they get positive feedback on thinkbroadband and webhostingtalk (thanks for the link, ken).

(I transferred my domain name to tsohost before I read the posts about making sure it is registered to me.Isn't it still registered to me, though? Sorry, not too clued up on these things.)

I had been trying to use a free web hosting package (with host-ed) but couldn't get ftp to work, and support didn't seem very interested. I guess you get what you pay for...

Do a whois.net on your domain name. It should show you as the registrant.
