Site move craziness

[link to this post]

I just set up a new hosting account with a different host from my previous Purple Cloud. Uploaded robertos.me.uk site using the FTP built-in to NetObjects Fusion Essentials.

Then I changed the ns records on the Purple Cloud Domain. That's all I could change - the DNS records on the Web Hosting are fixed. The intention is to move the domain reg later.

Kept testing and testing with IE8, FF and Chrome - the two changed pages (About and Version log) which should now show V0.4.0 persisted in showing the previous version number. Several closes and reloads of the browsers and finally a reboot. No change!

So I just loaded it with Safari. Success!!! But not frown.

The About page showed V0.4.0, the Version log showed V0.3.8 ???? So then I clicked the About - V0.3.8.

What can be going on?

So a few minutes later Safari seems to get it right. OE, Chrome and FF still completely wrong. I'm going out for the evening.

Edit - spoke too soon. In that short time Safari is now completely wrong as well.

Your SOA MINIMUM TTL is set to 24 Hours.

So it will take that long for your domain changes to "propagate" around the Internet.

Things should look better tomorrow (24 Hours after the change) when all of the cached entries for your DNS records have expired.

A much lower value (say 5 minutes) would be a good idea - 24 hours prior to such a change.

Ah thanks.

I have a feeling that will be one of the things Purple Cloud doesn't let me adjust. But I shall be doing the same with another site soon so I shall investigate that first.

Thanks again.

Checked again just before posting this - FF and Safari have it OK now, IE I had to close and reopen because even a Refresh didn't work (although a second copy worked).

Chrome still wrong ... ah, I wonder - Clear Browsing History and now OK. So I can safely transfer the domain registration if I feel like it.

Can't be done. I can view them but find no way of altering them.

SOA record

TTL 1 days
Refresh 3 hours
Retry 1 hours
Expire 7 days
Minimum 3 hours
