Business Domain Registration

[link to this post]

I am helping out a colleague setting up a small website for a business her partner is currently setting up. She needs to register the domain but does she need to register it as a business or will personal do? On 1and1 registration when you select it as a business it asks for a business number which she doesn't have. She said she didn't need to declare the business for 3 months and even if she did she isn't sure he would get a number as a sole trader?

I don't understand these things (as you can probably tell) but can anyone give me some advice to pass on as to how best to proceed?

Thanks

Just do it as personal, makes no difference!

as a Sole Trader - I'd register the domain in the Sole Trader's Name (probably meant to tick any boxes saying "non-trading" in this case) - if/when company is up and running details can be updated/domain transferred

Try Heart Internet instead for registering the domain. They have a good reputation.

In any case, do not use the same company to register the domain as she is going to use to host the website.

I have reseller hosting and will be hosting it for her. On aside note - why would you want to get the domain.hosting separately?

Which top level domain? .com you can have privacy but .co.uk you'd have to have name and address details for the whois entry.

So a rogue hoster can't hold you to ransom by refusing to release the domain. If you can repoint the domain yourself, then you can move your hosting at will and sort out any other arguments at leisure.

Sounds good, but remember that somebody else sells you the reseller account.

Do you really know that the account has not been resold many times. (it happens frown)

So, get the domain registration from somebody completely different.
