Whigh ISP can turn off interleaving at the moment

[link to this post]

I must say I am very happy with my ISP, however it does appear that BT can't turn off interleaving despite many requests.

I am therefore looking to see who can get interleaving turned off?

Has anybody managed it with their ISP in the last couple of months?

Cheers, Shire

At the moment no ISP can.

The problem is with BT wholesale's systems and until they are fixed we're all stuck.

Mine got turned off today. Via a Team Leader at BT though. Has taken a week or two.

Surely LLU Providers can as well?

Anyone had any success?

But has it made much difference? As far as I could see from the technical explanation it would be quite a small improvement so not worth the hassle.

It depends what you are doing. Interleaving can increase the latency of the hop between your router and the exchange quite a bit - as much as 20ms or more in some cases.

This is why you see some people quoting basic ping times of the order of 15 to 20ms to UK sites while others see 35 to 40ms. (There are geographical differences too, caused by the route from the user's phone to the exchange to BT's backbone and finally to where Enta's centrals join the backbone varying - but my guess is that in most cases interleaving on/off is more significant than this).

The difference between a 15ms latency and a 35ms one might be noticeable to some gamers, or on some operations over VPN arrangements (anything that is dependent on the transfer speed of small packets) though for the majority of people I doubt it is *really* worth the hassle.

When people start reporting that BT have got the problems fixed with changing interleave status, I might have mine turned off to see if it does impact VPN usage enough for me to notice the difference (though even with it on, latency is much better here than with my last ISP [PlusNet] especially at high demand times such as weekend evenings.)

There isn't that much technical difference, I was more determined to get it turned off because BT were making such a big thing of it.

When going to command prompt and typing in 'ping www.bbc.co.uk' I used to get 30-40ms. Now I get 11 - 15ms consistently.
