Which ISP - short term contract (orange broadband?

[link to this post]

I'm moving into a new place today, and want to get a decent broadband service - however, I'm not sure how much longer I'll be in the country (although it will be at least 6 months).

I have an Orange mobile account, and am eligible for the free broadband deal.

who would you recommend?

will they make me pay out the contract if I cancel in 6 months?

A colleague was saying that if you leave the country, they don't make you pay it out.

Thanks.

If your under a contract length and you leave without paying any cancelation charge that they may set, the fact that you are moving out of the cournty would not stop them chasing, just might making harder. Why not go for someone with a monthly contract, there are plenty of providers out there that will do that for you.

I wasn't suggesting I'd run off without paying - although apparently a lot of people try that - it's just that a colleague said that one of his mates was leaving the country and when he called up to cancel he just had to prove that he was (boarding pass or something), and they waived the charges. I'd never heard of that elsewhere though.... Also, this move is unexpected, and my current place has Telewest, but i can't transfer that to the new place, so I'm wondering how much I'll have to pay there... at the 7 month stage of a 9 month contract...

I thought that the Orange "free" option might have been a good one to consider, but from what I've read it's not... I think I'll be in an LLU area, which makes it sound worse...

Might have to look at one of the ones with monthly contracts...

any recommendations?

Do you have Be? how have you found them to be? reliable? fast?

do they do any port blocking/throttling?

That deal sounds pretty good - and I could handle the 3 months notice period...

1-3 week activation period sux a bit though...

I do have be yes and for me they have been very reliable. the ^3 weeks activation is to cover mishaps I was actually connected in 6 days. They dont do any throttling and the only port that is blocked is 25 (in order to prevent spam being sent by users - can be unblocked by paying for a static IP address @

I'd recommend NewNet. Reliable service and customer service to match.

FYI - it automatically put the code "free" in the code field, which gave me connection with no fee (saving
