Any Experience with O2 service

[link to this post]

Planning to give up on Pipex after 6 years and wanted reliable fast service with good support - but reluctant to pay IDnet price.

Any comments please

Presumably you have checked you can get O2? They seem OK though Be is having technical and speed trouble at the moment. O2 owns Be and uses their system, just packages the services differently.

Useful comparisons. Entanet don't sell direct, good resellers are ADSL24, ukfsn and vivaciti.

Hello Anon

I'm just passing thru here after testing my connection speed on the main site. I've had the O2 8meg service since launch so I thought you might find my comments useful. I'm no expert at any stretch. I actually get approx 3meg down / 1meg up, but was told by several ISP's that I shouldn't expect much more than 512k due to distance / quality of line from the exchange. O2 themselves reckoned on between 512k & 1meg.
I honestly think its an excellent product, from ordering it thru the 4 months to now. I ordered online on a Monday, received all the stuff on the Wednesday (3 days!), and was working perfectly at the first attempt on the Friday. You get a couple of diagnostic applets (BB Assist, Email Assist.) which pop-up if they detect a problem ... they usually sort out any issues within seconds. Communication is pretty good, from payments being taken to outtages of the service due to maintenance. Other than that, I've never had to speak to anybody about anything in the 4 months.
I don't hesitate to recommend it. If I measure what I get versus what it said on the tin, it has equalled or exceeded all my expectations.

Hope this is useful to you or anyone else.

Good luck.

Pete

I was told today by O2 that I can't sign up unless I have a mobile phone. My wife and I are probably the last two people in the UK that don't need a mobile, and I'm quite annoyed that a mobile phone (even a non-O2 one) is REQUIRED to sign up for a BROADBAND service. It's kinda like saying "Sorry sir, I can't sell you a toaster unless you already own a coffeemaker!". Customer service said they can only go by what's on the website. Huh?

Go for Be instead (O2 own Be and use Be's network). Be are purely a broadband supplier and don't tie you in with a mobile phone contract. They are more expensive but offer more for the money.

It's totally daft.

The ridiculous reason is this:-

There are a few things youll need to hand:
.
.
You mobile phone number, so we can text you when your service is up and running. It doesnt matter if youre not an O2 mobile customer.
.
.
You can also order over the phone. Call 0800 230 0202 and someone nice will take you through the whole process
.

How sweet and twee. Also interesting that it has the "r" missing from "Your" on the mobile phone one.

That's the thing - they're not asking to tie you into a mobile phone contract. They just require a mobile number to send you this single text when the service is ready, as if I can't figure that out myself. I would understand if it was a bundle package like Sky, requiring you to be a Sky subscriber. So they're turning down my business because they can't send me a single text?

Thanks for that. It's sometime since I've looked at their web-site and didn't realise they also sell "unbundled" broadband now.
