Changing from bulldog to sky broadband?

[link to this post]

Looking for some advice. I recently moved out from my parents house, and though i did use p2p/internet quite a lot they dont really use it that much so i'm wondering whether it might be worth switching to a cheaper service. Currently we are on bulldog 8mb/512kb unlimited paying 30 a month, but that includes line rental (going with a BT line would add another 10 a month for line rental, correct?).

Thinking of maybe changing them to the sky "mid" service. It's 5 a month, with BT line rental that would increase it to 15 a month and since we don't have sky TV the set up cost would be 120 (if i read the confusing small print correctly?). So for the first year if i spread the cost of activation out it would be 25 a month and after that 15 a month including line rental.

What do you guys think of this?

If they have a standard Sky box, the 6 mix channel package (pretty much everything except the movies & sport), and go for Sky "mid", the one-off set up cost is 30, with a 26 a month ongoing subscription charge.
Add to that the 10.50 BT line rental, and the remote possibility you'd have to pay BT 125 to re-connect (you should be able to do a free "return to donor", to get the line back with BT).

i have recently joined ukonline (easynet) which was purchased by sky and their ipstream service SUCKS don't even bother and is best avoided at all costs.

i was lied to about their traffic shaping and throttling and i am now in the process of moving away, if you want to use any p2p protocol app like: skype, bittorrent, vuze, bbc iplayer, channel 4OD player, do NOT join sky, tiscali, pipex, eclipse internet or ukonline, ukonline service sucks only on ipstream apparently, but how long until they want to save cash on their llu services to?

First thing to check is that you can receive Sky broadband on LLU.

Use the link I have put below and it will tell you exactly what ADSL services you can get by just putting in your post code or phone number (i.e. if it says "Sky LLU" - that means you can get Sky on LLU).

Link to ADSL services checker.

The set up cost isn't 120 - it is a one off 30.

You can also get Sky to bill you for your phone line rental instead of BT. Sky charge less than BT do (even though it is still a BT line).

If you don't have Sky TV already - get a "friend" to introduce you and then Sky will give you and the "friend" a free Sky + box each - Sky Introduce a Friend Offer.

Setup costs: possible 125 to BT to take over your line
Sky: 30 for new customers, the 120 is for having a Sky box and dish installed but not subscribing to any of the Sky TV services.
Minimum Sky TV subscription is 15 a month (and that gets you next to nothing) so TV + Mid Broadband will cost 20 a month. That gets you 40GB downloads at 8Mb, and for 20 there are good providers that will get you more than 40GB a month for that price. Basically unless you really wanted Sky TV anyway, Mid at an effective 20 minimum a month is not necessarily the best deal going.

Steve

Obviously that cost could apply whichever ISP the OP selects.

Very true. However if you have/or want Sky TV - then Sky Mid on LLU (or any Sky LLU package) is a "no brainer" really.

Sky also do a free phone calls deal plus Sky can also bill your phone line at a cheaper rental cost than BT charges (even though it is still a BT line).

In fact you can get Sky TV channels - Sky free phone calls deal - a Sky unthrottled broadband connection - cheaper phone line rental from Sky - and you can get everything from Sky for less than some charge just for a broadband connection.

The alternatives are mainly IPStream providers who are still stuck on the old "clunky" technology - most of which have some form of throttling or traffic management in place.
