Moving from BT due to throttling need help

Hi all

My contract is up with BT in a couple of months ive been with them since 2000 or so very loyal customer but the constant throttling on my connection after 6pm is very annoying, and im fed up so want to move.

For example my normal speed is about 700-720kbs but after 6 it can drop to 100-200kbs which is a joke and is when i get most use out of my connection.

Ive looked at IDnet and these seem like the best choice as no throttling and good speeds and service but i download quite a lot and �25 for 30gb is quite expensive i would really like an unlimited isp or a very high limit usage and im not really sure what would be best for me.

Would really appreciate if you could point me in the right direction.

Have a look at ADSL24. �19.99 for 30GB peak and 300GB off-peak. Off-peak starts at 10pm. At that point lots of heavy downloaders jump in and speeds can fall in a controlled way for a while.

The speeds you give look to me like KB not kb - KiloBytes? Not kilo-bits. In which case the speed you get dropped to could be as low as 250KBps - that's the cost of getting such a high bandwidth allowance.

That's the best choice for normal ADSL.

Put your phone number into here and see if you can get Be/O2, or Sky LLU.

If you have Sky TV then Sky LLU is worth a look.

O2 has some great offers on till the end of the month with a 100 day money back guarantee. Be gives the highest speeds of all, if your line can go that fast, but email is extra. (O2 owns Be and runs on their kit, but packages the product differently).

My speed is 5.5mb out of the 8mb available. ADSL24 does look quite good will look into it further thanks.

I put my number into the LLU site you gave me and got the list below but no Be/O2 not quite familiar with LLU. How come some say i can ge LLU but others dont?

you got Sky LLU on your exchange, and you dont need sky TV to enjoy there network as UKonline is also owned by SKY, maybe worth you checking them out also...
cant give any advice on bulldog LLU as i know nothing about them...
But i have spent the last couple of months looking into joining UKonline and can only find positive posts about there LLU product..
But you will have to agree to a 12 month contract , and thay do have a FUP but dont seem to inforce it...
If you already got SKY satalite its a no brainer go with sky direct for your broadband...
as for TalkTalk, AOL, Tiscali, avoid if you like your downloading...
ADSL24 are indeed also very good but not perfect as when the high usage cap kicks in at 10pm and over the weekends there network does slow, but never that slow that online gamming web surfing youtube blah blah dont work...thay all seem to work perfectly at peak usage times.....

Thanks for tips, on the ukonline it says my speed is about what i get now 5.5 mb'ish so would getting LLU be any benefit to me?

if you get 5.5mb on ADSLMax IPstream at the moment you should get faster on ADSL2+ LLU network ..
I would if i was you look at there Pro package/up to 8mb service , there are poster that will ask for your line stats and give you a very good estimate of your line speed on adsl2+ , but im not one of them, all i can say is you should get a faster connection with a LLU network that uses the ADSL2+ instead of ADSLMAX.....

Ok i cant tell you from experience as im now waiting for my migration to go through, but from other peoples post on this and other forums it has become clear that there is no or very little slowdown on sky LLU network...
If your coming from BT throttled product to UKonlines un throttled product , i think im safe in saying YES you will see huge benefits.....

As woweebert says, the UKOnline/Sky should be much better, though I haven't looked at the price for UKOnline. You also get the benefit of not having the IPStream (BT Wholesale) profiling system which slugs your speed at all times, and really messes you up for up to 5 days if you get a one-off low sync.

You need to make sure you will be connected to their LLU system, not the IPStream system - which can happen if their available LLU slots at your exchange are full.

(LLU means the ISP has their own ADSL equipment in the exchange. Anything that isn't LLU is BT Wholesale IPStream or Datastream on BT exchange equipment, whoever the ISP is).
