where to go from bt?

[link to this post]

i have been with bt for about 2 years now and i am thinking of leaving because i am now getting speeds of 1.2 - 2meg when i used to be having around 4( it says my downstream on the router is 4400) and i keep geeting disconected from the router thorough wireless even though the wireless light is still on.

what would be a good broadband company to go to?

i always game alot on my xbox and download the occasional torrents and also download demos on the xbox so i will need a high download (my bt was ulimited)

i have a feeling my speed has gone down because my router keeps turning off but if i go to another company can they make my speed go back up?

i have gone to some websites like orange and tiscalli etc and they say my highest speed is 1meg when it used to be 6. even the speed i am getting now is sometimes 2meg. is there any reason for this?? the only company that i have tried that have said i can get higher than 1meg is be that says i can get 5meg. why do be say i can get more?

anyway i hope you can help me

i dont want to pay alot and a phone contract with the broadband would be good but not essensial

thanks

What exchange are you on?
You can check the available services (and which LLU providers are there) using the checker at SamKnows.

Also, tell us your current line stats (line attenuation, connection speed, and noise margin) and we'll have a better idea [of what your line is capable of], rather than the plain guesswork carried out by the ISPs, when you type your number into their checkers (which is based, mainly, on BT's duff database).

The right approach normally, but if Be says the OP can get 5Mbps that implies the phone number has been put into the Be web site and the exchange is unbundled and has spare connections.

If so, then Be Value has to be the best choice whatever else is shown by sam, though the line stats you asked for may show Unlimited would be just feasible.

In my opinion - Easy!

The phone stays with BT of course. (For the OP's information).

See if this helps you get the line stats smile.

CRC and HEC are errors, i.e. mistakes that are then corrected by retransmitting the data.

You have a 4.5Meg sync, and 5Meg from Be is probable, and others are simply giving you the results from the BT checker which is giving a worst case scenario.

Basically if you change to a provider that uses Rate Adaptive ADSL (Max) you should get the same sort of sync speeds.

Question is does the bandwidth figure vary throughout the day?

yeah it is between 1meg - 3 meg. it constantly changes.

i just done two speedtests then on two different websites, one after another and the results were alot different

1st one
3420 kbps
322 kbps

2nd one
1190 kbps
144 kbps

why are they so different?
is there an accurate speed tester?

You mentioned connecting my wireless and suffering disconnects. I gather from this that your PC is connected to the router by a wireless connection. Its possible that this is the source of all your problems if there is increased noise/contention for the airwaves in your street. Wireless connections use a very narrow radio band and its quite feasible to get crowded out by the neighbours. In addition electrical applicances including boiler pumps and lighting can cause interference.

If there as any possibility of you running a speed test using a WIRED ETHERNET connection to the router it would be much clearer. Do the wireless adapter screens on the PC give any indication of WLAN (wireless lan) speeds?

First you need to check that the bandwidth figure you mentioned earlier is not changing.
Also as suggested rule out local wireless interference as being the issue.

Our speedtester is generally accurate and will reflect the speed between your PC and our server, so if you have wireless issues that will affect the result.

If the bandwidth figure is changing a lot on the router, then your ADSL is disconnecting a lot and that is not good, so first step is to test whether it is more stable when you plug the wireless router into the test socket on the master socket i.e. as show in the picture http://www.thinkbroadband.com/images/faq...

The text at http://www.thinkbroadband.com/faq/sectio... shows a free method that can improve your connection quality particularly if you have lots of extension.
