moved from tiscali to freeola and now thinking O2

[link to this post]

most of the tech talk here is a bit beyond me, so anyone kind enough to reply, please keep it relatively simple!
I recently moved from tiscali to freeola and all I'm getting is dial-up speeds (12Kbps). I had regularly been getting over 1Mbps with tiscali and nothing has changed on my computer apart from the modem ( I even trieed setting up the old modem with the new connection). One email I got said the problem is with my pc, but I just can't believe that as nothing is different from before.
I noticed one post in this forum that mentioned the confusing bundling issue. My line rental has always remained with BT, however my calls were with tiscali along with my broadband, and when I switched to freeola, I left the calls side unchanged as freeola don't offer a package. I was wondering if this might be creating an issue. I am now beginning to regret moving and as freeola is a monthly contract I thought I might try O2, but I'd like to sort out any issues first.
What I can't understand is why I am getting such slow speeds - I've heard of syncing, but I don't see loads of other posts with the same problem - when I originally changed to tiscali from BT the speed increase was instant.
sorry if this is all a bit long winded and confused, but that's where I'm at! Any advice would be appreciated.
Farmergiles.

Hi,
To help you further there are a couple of things you will need to do.
First off you will need to run a BT speedtest (www.speedtester.bt.com) and post those results back here, and also find your router stats, the info needed is your connections speed as reported by your router including the attenuation and noise margin if your not sure how to get these, some help can be found Here once we have this information we can then try to see what is going wrong and how things may be able to be improved.

thanks for the reply - I don't have a router, just a modem, but thanks to your link I think this is the relevant info here...

Startup Progress: Completed (0xad)
Last Failed: 0x0000006b
Bit Swap Counter: 0x00000689
DSP Firmware Ver: Y1921
Local Coding Gain: 5.5
Remote Vendor ID: b5-00-54-53-54-43-00-00
Remote Vendor Rev: ad-00-00-00
Annex Type: Annex A
Data Rate (Rx/Tx): 2656 / 448
Line Rate (Rx/Tx): 2944 / 544
Heading: Local / Remote
Attenuation (dB): 58 / 31.5
SNR Margin (dB): 9.5 / 6.5
there's a lot more in the text file if you need more.thanks again.

Well that shows you have a sync of just over 2meg, you now need to run the BT speedtest to see what your profile is showing, as I would gues youve had some slow sync events that is holding your profile down.

my speed was so bad yesterday, I couldn't even load this page. I did a bt test earlier which gave the same data rate as above, and also actual throughput as 33kbps. It said the tests were inconclusive and I should follow instructions to change login details to bt_test@freeola (something like that). I followed instructions to the letter, but my login was refused.
I have been told off for not staying constantly online (after being asked to perform all these different tests which require temporary disconnection), so now I will have to wait another couple of days before I try the bt test as described on Kitz.
cheers,

The test at www.speedtester.bt.com doesn't need you to disconnect to run Test 1, which is all we are interested it.

Unfortunately you tell us the data rate was the same, and the throughput. What you don't tell us is a vital piece of info, which was what the requests to run the tests were looking for. That is the IP Profile.

Please can you run it again (you have to wait at least 3 hours from a previous test, and copy and paste the full results.

Your DSL connection rate: 2656 kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP profile for your line is - 2000 kbps
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 16 kbps

This test was not conclusive and further testing is required.

thanks for your reply RobertoS, I t is at this point in the test that it asks you to reconfigure adsl system, which I presume needs disconnection.

Yep, but that tells us enough. As you say, it's grim frown.

The IP profile is what actually limits your speed, and it can get set to a very low value sometimes. Yours of 2000 is correct for that connection speed and you should get well over 1400kbps most of the time with a decent ISP.

That 16kbps doesn't look like a poor ISP though, it looks like something seriously wrong somewhere.

Are you connected wired or wireless to your router? If it is wireless, try wired, even if it is a nuisance moving stuff. It's just to make sure it isn't a wireless problem.

Simlarly is the router connected to the master socket with the ADSL cable, a plug-in phone extension, or to a wired phone extension?

Others know more than me about the next step, and how to get Test 2 and 3 to work. But I would have thought any ISP would take notice of that result without those - though they may want 3 "Test 1"s like it not just one. (If they ask for more than three they are taking the proverbial).

thanks again, my modem (bt voyageer105) is connected to the master socket with the same cable I always used - an extra long adsl, but direct. Nothing has changed from my setup with tiscali - I even configured my old modem so everything would be identical, but with same result. The day before the change I was getting 1.5(ish) Megs from tiscali, so I cannot see any reason it would be my setup that's at fault here.
I have wondered if my phone contract still being with tiscali is causing some problem. Also when I tried step 2 of the speed test with all the correct details, my connection was refused, which may be a clue to someone.
have to rush to work now ( no rest for the wicked).
cheers,

just to say thanks, and the issue is now resolved... apparently they got the wholesalers to rebuild the radius entry, which means a whole lot of nothing to me - but it sure worked as I am now getting a full 2megs. Despite my problems, I would not want to discourage anyone from trying freeola and if they live up to their highly praised reputation, I will stay with them for a long time - if not, then there's no 12 month contract, so easy to move.
cheers,
