Spec me an LLU service!!

[link to this post]

Hi,

Im currently with adsl24, but might switch to a LLU service if that will get me more speed.

http://www.samknows.com/broadband/exchange/EALOW

The following services are available at my exchange:

BT Wholesale ADSL
BT Wholesale ADSL Max
BT Wholesale WBC (21CN)
BT Wholesale SDSL
AOL LLU
Bulldog LLU (C & W)
TalkTalk (CPW) LLU
Sky Broadband / Easynet LLU
Tiscali LLU
Orange LLU (Formerly Wanadoo)

I download about 80gb per month between midnight and 8am. So this needs to be considered.

I have been looking at Sky LLU, i'm justs concerned about the 12 month contract, is there a harsh FUP and throttling?

I have also been looking at vivaciti who have just signed a deal with C&W LLU, which I can also get. It's priced exactly the same as adsl24 and says it's "unlimited".

Basically Sky is half the price, but will they throttle me if I download my usual 80gb a month?

gah I should say I'm on 2mb out of a MAX of 8mb at the mo, apparently my phone line is really pants, adsl24 are now swicthing me over to ADSL2, where I'm expecting to hit circa 4mb, so is a move even worth it considering my line is gash anyway.

Some people on another forum have been saying that when they switched to vivaciti LLU (on the same exchange as me) they went from 3mb to 10mb , is it realistic to think I could ever get close to say 7-8mb if I went for an LLU service?

My line stats are:

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 1600 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 53.0 db 31.5 db
Noise Margin 15.9 db 10.0 db

I think my line is having a funny day as I usually sink at 2048 and noise margin of 12db. :/

Lastly am I right in thinking that by going LLU an troubles of the BT system go away? So there might actually be a good chance of some serious speed increases on an LLU product?

Hi,
Firstly I have just done a look up with your current stats, and our calc estimates at about 4mb (based on the stats you put in this post) And yes with LLU you no longer have to worry about the profile system as there is not one, so your speeds are more in line with your sync. And yes it is unlimited with no FUP at all. Oh and there is no 12 month contract either.
Do you know what your stats were before the re-sync?

yeh my speeds usually are:

sync 2000
attenuation 53
noise 12

with your package, are there any "hidden exit fees" or migration (outbound) charges?

is 4mb a conervative estimate? or the most I can hope to achieve? or at least 4mb?

Sorry for the questions.

Hi,
The estimate with those stats come out about the same speed. The estimates are about as close as can be using the calc we have access to, could be more depending on any internal wiring changes, filters or router (some are better than others)
The migration fee is £46 (inc VAT) we swallow half of this and only charge £23.00 if you leave within 6 months we ask for the other half back, after 6 months nothing.

With those stats you are very unlikely to get above 4500kbps sync. More like the 4000 already suggested.

However if you have never checked your home wiring there may be room for some improvement. See this FAQ.

I would recommend the vivaciti unlimited LLU over the Sky partly because of the 12-month contract there and partly because the vivaciti one runs on the C & W network. Historically ISPs using that get consistently good performance.

The top Sky package is also unlimited with no FUP though so cannot be ignored if the price difference is important. The lower packages have an FUP on them, I don't have any details.

The big thing you will notice is the absence of the daft BT profiling system. If you get a low sync for any reason, next time you sync high you are immediately back to the correct speed for that sync.

I'm looking at £20 max, with no migration fee preferably. The £20 at vivaciti isn't to bad, but... i would prefer no fee smile

Ok, my sister is moving to sky broadband tommorrow so i will see how much her speed jumps, she lives further from the exchange than me and only has 1mb on adsl24 atm.

Just need to discuss a few things with the wife and see if we wanna change.

I'm also concerned of downtime during migration, my wife runs a business from home so we can't afford to lose internet at all. We will lose money and I will get a full half hour on top :/

There is some down time, but as a rule it's about 10 mins, although the longest was one hour.

Have you considered a USB 3G dongle for any unplanned outages?
