Moving home.....

[link to this post]

I'm hopefully going to be moving home soon and I'm currently with A&A. I was rather hoping that if I stayed with them, I might avoid some of the costs. Not so.

Cease: £21.40+VAT (passed on at cost from BT)
30 days notice is hard to quote but say around £10-£15 if charging for
services between 1st September to 10th September

Install for new connection: £43.47+VAT.

As much as I like A&A, that's some expensive movement costs. BT especially have a [censored] cheek with the cease cost. A&A's activation seems alot?

So, is there anyway to get back online cheaper? Free activation with maybe a 3 month contract or something? No 12 monthers please....

I'm on the Dorchester exchange. LLU is TalkTalk and Orange. No WBC. ADSL Max only.

It's near enough the cost that BT charge.. you'll either get providers that offer the provide at near enough cost price, ones that will give it half price as long as you stay for X months (otherwise you pay the difference back) and others who'll give it free for a longish term contract.

surely if you research your new ISP well you can justify a longer contract? 3 months with free install doesn't give the ISP long to recover their costs.

I've been looking at getting a new landline recently, but the ADSL setup is pretty much 30 quid if using some LLU service, and 40+VAT from anyone using BTO to do the work. A+A is charging abot 4 quid (inc VAT) more than some, perhaps to cover some admin costs (and probably worth it, given their reputation for getting the job sorted to customer's satisfaction, unlike some of the bigger ISPs).

While I can see that a cease appears to 'take the mickey' it is probably needed for tidyness on the BT db, else someone new would find an existing tag and be blocked from getting ADSL. You would be eqally unhappy if your request for connection was delayed 2 months from moving in because of a db quirk.

Free activation on only 3 months? You must be kidding. I think there was a time when UK Online or maybe Virgin was doing it, but they must have seen the error of their ways, that people were only getting online with them and leaving ASAP. Sorry, I think you may have to 'bite the bulllet' and pay the cash, or go with a 12 month minimum.

As it happens, I still have a 60+ quid credit note from my last ISP ( it took a bit of time to cancel the DD after I moved, while I had BT cancel the line immediately and indicated to the ISP that there would have been X pounds in payments, but BT should have stopped billing them). I didn't pay a cancel fee, I think BTO absorbed it, unless it was before they started charging (it was more than 18 months ago). So I may consider using that ISP and getting the free BT line, my other option being to use Opal and pay the cost of a new phone line, but lower line rent + BB fees for 2 years.
