ISP/Phone Service in a Non-LLU Area

Hi Everyone,

I don't usually post here, but I am helping a member of another forum I am a regular user of.

Here is the situation,

Her son has moved into new rented accom, and wants to get Broadband/Phone installed.

I have checked SamKnows and their exchange is EASST which appears to ONLY have BT/Virgin Media services. So my original suggestion of O2 appears out of the question. She used Home Phone Choices which suggested TalkTalk but I have had Zero experience of them, and also have NO idea if they would be available.... I have been told he mainly uses XBox online and general web surfing....

So I need some help here. Who can they use and who are "reasonable".. I know that last question is an open book.... The also need a phone line to use the Broadband service, but BT wanted to charge £127.99 for a calls only service or as I have now noticed £50 for calls/broadband...

You were right to see what samknows has to say.

The TalkTalk she will have seen would be TalkTalk LLU which is not available there. As such it is a total no-no. The LLU service can be fine for some people.

On the info so far about his expected usage I suggest Plusnet Pro. Note that the exchange is not in a Plusnet low-cost area so the higher prices will apply after the third month.

Plusnet will also install a phone line cheaper than BT. On the other hand if he is likely to be there for eighteen months or more then there is a current BT offer of installation for £29.99.

A bit more info would help. Is he a student sharing the accommodation or having lots of visitors who may use the link?

Are you confident he only does web surfing? That sounds very unusual. Is he likely to be giving his mum correct details of what he does online!

You need to think carefully about the answer!

They talk about a 12-month contract or minimum term. But that isn't strictly true.

Both the phone line and the broadband are actually on 10-day notice. However on the broadband there is a setup charge and you can also have a "free" router, though if you already have a router you can opt not to have it.

You can pay those up-front or go for the "12-month contract". If you pay for them then the 10 day notice applies.

If you don't pay them, both the setup and router costs are put as outstanding on the account. At the end of 12 months they disappear. If you decide to leave within the 12 months, giving 10 days notice, you just have to pay for them then. Just as if you had paid at the start.

So for most people there is no point is paying up-front.

Remember I said Plusnet Pro, not Extra.

The differences are that Pro only has a 20GB allowance, but gets priority for things like gaming and no traffic management, whereas Extra has 60GB but has this traffic management. They need to realise this.

Both have an unlimited night-time period, so if 20GB peak isn't enough he would have to schedule heavy stuff overnight.

How do you locate the Pro package on PN's site???
