Hello all,
My contract for broadband is coming to an end in Oct, (o2 access, was terrible but has been fine for the last 2 months).
It appears sky have now unbundled my exchange, has anyone had any issues with speed, throttling etc? I do torrent, but very infrequently. Mostly I use youtube and seesaw.
So any negs for sky unlimited before I give them a call?
Thanks x

Been with sky LLU for past 18 months, Truly unlimited IS as it says, TRULY unlimited, no throttling, infrequent disconnections and I use torrents very infrequent, but download lots from FTP servers.
Just do it, beats BT hands down, plus your speed will increase and no loss of speed at peak times.

I joined Sky last week and it's amazing. Like you they have just unbundled my exchange. I'm syncing at over 14Mb and getting about 12.5Mb in speed tests. No throttling on torrents, no slowdowns at peak times that I have come across.
From my limited experience of the service it's brilliant and great value.

If i dont have a phone line, is it worth taking up sky line rental, or should i go for primus/bt which will come up to 1-2gbp cheaper?

You get £5 off your broadband if you take Sky's line rental, so overall it would probably work out cheaper to do so.

So am i right that if you have say a BT line, you cant take the Sky Talk Unlimited for the discount?

You used to be able to just take the calls side from Sky and get the broadband discount. As far as I know this has now changed, so you have to take rental from Sky as well, if you want the discount.

As _Resonance_ says, if you want the discount you have to take Sky line rental. But on a BT line you can have Sky LLU Broadband and Sky Talk calls.
However you may not realise that if you take Sky LLU Broadband and Sky line rental then the line doesn't classify as a BT line for other ISPs. It is a pain migrating out. It usually means getting the line transferred to a BT line supplier then ordering broadband on it a couple of days after it is connected. Plus a connection fee for the broadband and perhaps the line.

If you don't have a Sky TV subscription then Broadband Unlimited will cost £15 a month,
and when you add Sky Talk Freetime to BB Unlimited it will cost £10 a month.
Sky > link
The prices differ if you have a Sky TV subscription.

Thanks for clearing things up guys, really helps a lot.
Since I am a student, and will probably only stay at the flat for a year (or if continuous, then I might just continue using Sky), the migration trouble wont affect me much then?
Then I suppose it's much better cost-wise to take up Sky line rental.

You do not have to take Sky line rental to get the price reduction, only a call package.
I's exactly as apprentice says £10 BB Unlimited and talk freetime no tv pack or £15 BB and Talk Unlimited
Freetime
Unlimited
Second part I totally agree with, its a pain leaving Sky line rental to change ISP at a later date,if you wanted.

Hmmmm.
I swear the Pick'n'Mix screen has changed since less than 2 weeks ago.
I agree with what you say. I don't believe it was so 2 weeks ago. I'm sure there was some extra discount for taking Line Rental. Maybe I'm wrong, but it still means full LLU and that's not always good news.

Sky talk line rental has no bearing on the cost of the broadband at all.
Sky talk calls packages ether freetime or unlimited are what give the £5
off the broadband reduction.
Sky unlimited Broadband taken with Sky TV = £12.50
Sky unlimited Broadband taken with Sky TV and any Sky Talk calls pack = £7.50
Sky unlimited Broadband taken on its own = £15.00
Sky unlimited Broadband taken with any Sky Talk calls pack (no tv) =£10.00

Must have changed again then.

Okay so from what I understand, I only need to take the calls package and not the line rental from Sky to be eligible for the discount. Currently, I have an ongoing BT line for another flat which I am able to migrate it over to my new flat. I believe migrating would add on another year to the contract. I was just wondering if I could do that, and then take the Sky Calls package only with the broadband for the discount? Does BT allow that, or must I stay with them for another year again to use another provider's call package?

You can take a call package from whomever you want. As you mentioned you may have contractual obligations for the line.
There is no automatic tie up with line and voice package, unless you sign up for that, so you need to look at the small print when agreeing any deal. It may be a slightly more expensive option to do it that way but it can make changing ISPs easier, an option that many users prefer.

This was my previous experience (11 Months ago) I've been with o2 since then but as soon as my o2 contract is over I will more than likely be coming back to SKY Broadband.
Unless I get some super duper deal of a lifetime !!! Which never happens
