Not getting upto speed. Will service reduce if I reduce deal

[link to this post]

I'm currently on a deal for "up to" 24mbs which I'm not getting anywhere near (3-7mbs depending on test used) if I reduce by package will my actual speed go down even though I'm not getting anywhere near the speed I'm paying for.

Looking at local speeds I'm not sure any provider can beat current speeds regardless or package.

Any advice or tales of similar situations would be very much appreciated.

Sorry, a bit impersonal and lacking detail I now realise.

I'm currently with TalkTalk on the Plus package which offers 24mbs Max. I think the maximum I can get in actuality is limited by the phone lines available in the area (which seems to be <10mbs). No fibre optics in the area at the moment seeing as I'm out of a major city area in a smallish town.

TalkTalk are looking for a 2 year contract at the moment so I was just wondering if the package they're offering is overkill considering I'm not really going to see anywhere near the Max up to speed I'm paying for.

My name's Shane by the way, any input would be greatly appreciated.

If both packages you want to move to are ADSL2+, even if the new package is a lower headline speed (i.e 8Mb) and capped at that by TT, your sync should stay the same.

However, if the new package is ADSL1 up to 8Mb, you may see a small reduction when using the 'lower performance' modulation.

Post your router stats and we can tell if 24 Meg package is doing anything for you.

1999: Freeserve 48K Dial-Up => 2005: Wanadoo 1 Meg BB => 2007: Orange 2 Meg BB => 2008: Orange 8 Meg LLU BB => 2010: Orange 16 Meg LLU BB

Okay. Thanks Matt for your response, do you know who actually uses ADSL2+?

There is no mention of TalkTalk using this in the details they've provided. Does any ISP use it as standard and is it based again on the lines available in the area?

The majority will use ADSL2+. It is a safe bet that if you see a up to 16/18/20/24Mb package, that these are ADSL2+.

Most providers will now offer this as the defacto standard where possible, as the costs between the two are largely the same.

If you are not in a LLU area (like Talk Talk) or have BT's 21CN network at your exchange, you will only be offered up to 8Mb ADSL MAX (ADSL1) services - which you may get a speed reduction.

If you let us know which exchange at www.samknows.com, you are on, we'll be able to tell you what is possible there.

Thanks for the response xray.

What router stats are you looking for?

I've got the standard (I presume) TalkTalk router connected to the phone line and a Linksys wireless router attached on the back of that (although the speed tests previously referred to are from the desktop, not from the wireless laptop). Ill be able to supply technical details tomorrow as I'm not at home at the moment and posting via my phone at the moment.

Thanks again for your help Matt, impressed by the speed of forum responses here.

I'm on the Chester-le-Street exchange.

You have a lot of options on that exchange.

O2/Be - LLU - ADSL2+ (avoid the O2 Access package for the moment, that is ADSL1 - cheaper if you have O2 mobile on the former)
Sky - LLU - ADSL2+ (avoid Sky Connect, this is also ADSL1 - cheap if you have Sky)
PlusNet - BT-based - ADSL2+ using 21CN (pricing will be cheap as it is a Market 3 exchange. Abolished their long term contracts AFAIK).

If you wanted to pay much more, FTTC (Fibre, up to 40Mb) might also be possible where you live now/soon. Expect to pay more than normal ADSL but it is likely you should see much better speeds.
