Alright, from what I can tell John Lewis basically is Plusnet, but are there any key differences? Be it price, FUP or whatever. I'm looking at the unlimited packages in particular. Never been a fan of BT so if Plusnet or John Lewis are more viable for my 'unlimited' needs I would prefer to go with one of those providers.
Do Plusnet and John Lewis use different routers? Also a factor in my decision if one of them provides a better router. (Sorry my budget is tight so I don't want to have to buy new routers and so on)
Anyone able to shine a bit of light on this for me? Thanks for your time.

If memory serves me right, while plusnet has unlimited over night, there is no unlimited during the early evening, so John Lewis is better in that respect.
There may be some differences in the priorities given to types of traffic if you read the traffic management sections carefully.
Router is Technicolour TG585N on ADSL2+

Alright so John Lewis does sound better for my needs. Thank you.
Do you know if the Technicolour TG585N is a good reliable router? Also my exchange isn't ADSL2+ enabled, not sure if that matters?

Plusnet is in effect only 10 days notice if you want to leave within the 12 months. You have to pay the initial connection charge and also for the "free" router, that's all.

Also, it can matter which exchange you are on. Plusnet prices vary by type of exchange.

Bentley and Audi are Volkswagen. Almost totally irrelevant.

That is true (BT own PlusNet) but from an ISP infrastructure PoV they are not the same and from a customer support/service PoV they are not either (like the relationship between O2 and Be (which O2 own)).

I suspect the "John Lewis ISP" is just a "branch" of PlusNet, with JL doing the marketing and taking a cut.
As PlusNet wows to match anyone's internet deals, it should be possible to get the 'JL deal' from PlusNet directly...

Suspect? Its public knowledge that Plusnet run the service

Not quite, we'll price match any standalone broadband offer with our Value product.

...... Almost totally irrelevant.
Almost being the key word here. I get continually spammed by PlusNet on a very private email account even though I have never had anything whatsoever to do with them. Hopefully, this, among other things, has been resolved via the intervention of the office of the CEO of BT.
Perhaps I should have qualified my statement with regard to service but from my experience, PlusNet are merely "BT Sheffield" and if the OP has an aversion to BT, he should be aware of this.

Which is not a lot to match.

The reason I have a problem with BT is that a couple of years ago I had line rental from them (and used Vivaciti as my ISP) and they renewed a 12 month contract without my permission. I wrestled with them for a while, started threatning to report them to ofcom and they eventually agreed to 'let me go'. Just all seemed very underhanded to me.
I think I might have other options now anyway.

I think you will find the contract auto-renewal has been outlawed now.

Then you were on an auto-renewable contract and you failed to read the conditions and letters. You did give them permission by your inactivity.
Such contracts are now banned, but weren't then.

Even so, it's still underhanded. I never recieved any letters near the end of my contract about it auto-renewing.
The threats about reporting them to ofcom weirdly worked. All good in the end.
