Hi,
I am looking at moving from Sky Unlimited to EE broadband. £2.50 broadband and £11/month phone package.
I get a good connection with Sky but some dropouts when streaming iPlayer etc and some slow web page loading.
Have seen many people say that EE slow ALL traffic at peak times not just P2P.
I don't use newsgroups or P2P.
What are people's opinions on this, is it a contention issue?
How can you find out the contention from each provider at my exchange etc.
Do EE normally have a higher contention than Sky?
Is it worth moving from Sky to EE or is this a bad move, I know that Cust services is bad, have an Orange Mobile, but saving £10/month is a very good deal.

Just wondering with the catchment area, does it really cost EE more to provide services outside of their area? Afterall they use BTs equipment everywhere now right?

I believe EE's network area is a mixture of their old LLU area + conditions placed upon them by / agreed with BTw when they signed up for White Label.

Am i in EE's old network area? (Exchange WMKDG)
i just moved to EE Tues 8th oct, although i have seen HTTP downloads come down at 8+ MB/s any time of the day (origin/steam ect). iPlayer can stutter quite a bit anytime.
i did a broadband quality monitor for the first night after connection for 24 hours and it seemed quite stable at avg 20ms latency and 25ms max 0% dropped packets.
could it be the iplayer website or could my connection be simply settling in?

Run the iPlayer Speed Test at various times of the day.

I agree with that Andrew, but it does mean the standard Market based pricing does not apply.
XRaySpeX did a lot of research on this when it happened. On EE it appears to be exchanges that were Orange LLU that are well treated, and non-LLU badly.

So would that mean that where I am with my exchange that I "should" get a good service with EE/Orange? Is my exchange an old Orange LLU one?
Is going from Sky Unlimited with a 19Mbps connection to EE worth it?
Saving £10/month but not if it's going to cause a real hassle.

No 100% answer, but the market 3 pricing reduction applies no matter which provider...on top of this is the option for negotiated discounts

FYI: EE's Service Availability Area (BB Network Area) = all exchanges where Orange had LLU (1867) + those Market 2 exchanges where Orange didn't have LLU (326).
Market 3 price reduction is NOT applied by EE in all their 12 Market 3 Non-LLU Exchanges incl. EMTOWCE, THLG.

Never claimed it was! We were discussing EE's network area and as customers / potential customers we are only interested in the price to us.

yes i am on fibre i was on talktalk fibre before EE
well i dont think i will be finding out my actual line stats just yet as i have an ECI modem not the huawei 1
but will keep an eye on iplayer to see if it calms down or i can see any pattern in times when it or anything else i use buffers

EE deal is £2.50/month BB if on their network which it says I am.
This is half price but also includes a £5 discount for being an Orange mob phone customer.
£11/month line rental and weekend calls if paid as a yearly amount.
I clicked through from TopCashBack where EE are giving you £105 cashback!
Total sum = £57 for a years BB and Phone Rental.
That looks like too good a deal to say no to but I am concerned that EE/Orange BB gets a very bad review.
Coming from Sky LLU, I don't want to suffer a worse service to save money but if it's a good/equivalent service then all systems go.
What are peoples thoughts on EE/Orange BB?

It's fine for me but I'm not a heavy user. It's fast and mostly reliable (any glitches are usually due to BT messing about at exchange or cab, which can happen to anyone). Downside is phone support which is atrocious and, unlike others, they have no ticket reporting system.

Is the real problem not that it's a bad service technically but that the support is terrible?
Have not had a problem with my connection for a couple of years and that was even when I had a Zen Internet ADSL account.
As you said, it was a BT mucking about issue and Zen got it sorted.
Swapped from Zen to Sky for cost saving and it's been fine, connecting at approx 19Mbps.
I'm not a heavy user either, it just concerns me that cutting costs too much could lead to a fall and once signed up to a years contract.....

I think it would be ok, however the supports probably worse than Sky (even if sky isn't amazing)
I would suggest ringing sky and going through to cancellations and explaining that EE have a better deal & that you are tempted to switch but you're happy with the quality of Sky and the service you have, explain that you wondered if they could offer you any deals to make you stay. If they say no, just say okay I'll stay with Sky anyway. I think they're going to offer you something though, I've had some pretty decent deals this way. It might not be AS cheap as EE but it might meet in the middle or something.
If not then switch  I do stand by 'if it's not broke don't fix it' quite a lot though.

Haven't used EE but personally anything that is lower than cost to deliver I would not be expecting too much from. If it is not a service you consider to be important then go for it but if you are a person that would be unhappy should the connection go down or customer service be bad then personally I would not touch it - it is too cheap.

I have decided to cancel my EE order and stay with Sky who have now offered me free broadband for a year.
Going to try and get a new Sky Hub out of them as well to replace the Sky Sagem router I have.
I find the wireless signal not very good at all.

Is it the Sagem N router you have? If so the Sky hub isn't that much better, if it's the Sky G router then the Sky hub is worlds apart.
Both the Sagem N and Sky Hub are restricted by law in terms of output, so yes the sky hub has a few more antennas which gives better speed & stability, but overall range is similar, just within range the sky hub is supposed to be a bit better.

Yep the WiFi isn't that much better on Sky Hub. Most WiFi products will give a similar range. If you need more range it's best to buy another router, connect the new router where signal is poor, then wire the new router to the Sky router. Name the wireless on the new router the same as the Sky router and have the wifi details and same pasword...
Disable DHCP on new router... The new router becomes a 2nd connection, giving great wifi in the poor signal area.
Your laptop phone etc will choose automatically between the 2 points depending on signal.

That's a great retention deal you can't beat "free unlimited BB" unless they offered it say for two consecutive years or more 
I take it your line rental and calls are with Sky but do you have to have their Sat TV as well?

I got a retention deal of sorts certainly not free, but not bad for a 20CN exchange, for moving (internal migration) from maaf to PN, I'm still surfing with maaf after four working days and six in total since speaking to the COT.
Hopefully will be surfing with PN by the end of the week

Yeah, have Tv with them , just saved £8 on that s well.
I know someone who got the O2 to Sky conversion deal.
HD tv, unlimited BB and line rental for £14.95/month for a year!!
I asked to get it but they were adamant that it was only to O2 customers, they wouldn't budge.
Told me I was a very valued customer for 7 years though. Well give me a better deal then!!!!!
Happy with the deal but could possibly have gotten even better.

I'm on a 20CN exchange only BTw up to 8Meg for any ISP's to offer, no LLU providers like Sky or TT so not a lot of "cheap" deals available, believe me you did very very well!

Remember a few things they don't tell you when you swap.
For instance, most providers will give you a good discount for paying the line rental a year in advance.
EE do it for the equivalent of £11/month instead of £14.50.
Sky were going to give me it for £9.95/month if paid upfront but when I called back to take the deal, they said "as of today that deal is no longer and it has risen to £11.70/month"??
Still better than £15.40 their new price come December.
Sure you'll get a good deal somewhere.
What swung it for me is the good customer service I get from Sky and BB has been reliable since I got Sky a few years ago.
Ha, saying they also didn't tell me that the Tv with HD bolt on has now become one price.
I was paying for tv package and an extra £10.25 for HD.
It's now all combined as Entertainment Extra + and they swapped me over. They also gave 10% off for a year which I only knew about after many calls to try and get a deal from them.
Different things every time you call
