End of contract, changing ISP

[link to this post]

my BT contract ended yesterday, so am looking for a new isp provider. looking at the current deals, i have a short list of Now Broadband and Plusnet.

I am inclined towards Now as it works out cheaper

Appreciate any views on Now as I haven't seen any comments on this ISP on this forum.

thanks

Its been commented on quite a lot on these forums.

Its actually called NowTV, not Now. Use the Search function for NowTV choosing All posts instead of the default 3 weeks and youll get a long list smile.

Its owned and run by Sky. I buy a Day Pass for Formula 1 races that arent on Channel 4, so can stream them through my ISP. It generally works OK for that, but from what Ive read posted by people who have migrated to it as their ISP I wouldnt take the full service.

I was with Plusnet for a while. If I had to choose between them, I would go with Plusnet, though their own accounting and ordering systems are a mess. They are wholly owned by BT, in case you dont know that.

My broadband basic info/help site - www.robertos.me.uk. Domains, site and mail hosting - Tsohost.
Connection - AAISP Home::1 80/20. 200GB. Sync 67055/12482Kbps @ 600m. BQMs - IPv4 & IPv6

If your prime concern is price, don't then complain about the quality of service. Cheap nearly always means corners are being cut somewhere!

if things are working ok then all suppliers are basically the same,it's when things don't work as they should you discover the difference,I am now with Idnet after various cheaper suppliers over the years, took them a couple of weeks to identify an issue on my line that sky and plusnet ,combined with openreach(as Idnet have to use as well)took over 2 years not to fix,to me the extra cost is worth it but depends on where your priorities lie,if its cost,go cheap if its quality pay slightly more

How much cheaper is it? £5, £10?

I am with NowTV and I am looking at moving soon.

Customer Service is good, but my connection isn't great, and I dislike their supplied router (you can use your own but it's a nightmare)

On the other hand it's only a 30 day rolling contract!

diff is £10

30 day contract is attractive as things don't work then i can switch again

i am aware of the router (seen your earlier posts CJT)

am i correct in saying that as i am now out of contract, i can switch without informing BT ? Thats what i understood from various posts on BT forums. I understood as 14 day notice which the switch over period will address.

decision this weekend !

You can indeed.

It's gaining provider led, so you call or order online and your soon to be new ISP handles the move.

Expect a "sorry to see you go" message from BT.

asmost all use the same systems and rely on the same wholesale suppliers so,unless they throttle heavy users or are over subscribed,in theory they should all provide the same or very similar performance

One problem is that capacity costs money so there is the temptation for suppliers to under configure their networks. I found the Post Office to be an excellent example of this.

NowTV was pants for me - slow and laggy. The Router looks like a cake with the horrible green writing on it - it went in the bin when they didn't ask for it back

Thank god there was no contract - it was only in for a month.

I just left Plusnet too - and oddly enough the best ISP I had to date on FTTC was, :::::drumroll:::: Infinity 2!

I've had NOW TV, (TV, BB & Phone) for the last 7 months, to be honest it's been ok on the broadband side.

* Got 40MB BB service, peak runs around 28Mb, off-peak runs around 34Mb, distance from fibre cabinet is roughly 60m, that was confirmed by the recent OR engineer and i can see the cabinet from my window.

* TV side is generally ok, have the smart tv box, the box is pretty slow at changing channels, can sometimes take up to 30 seconds.

* Never used the phone

* Router is the latest one they do and the wi-fi range is very poor compared to the previous SuperHub3 i had from Virgin Media but for the size of my flat it does cover where i need it to.

My sister is subscribed to NOWTV 80/20 FTTC and she gets pretty much that speed always and it has never dropped. the lowest i seen it was 73/18 but has went up to 79/19. Their router however only seemed to have 2 ethernet ports so bare that in mind. You might need to buy extra equipment which could be cheaper to go with plusnet.

No one seems to have asked why you are moving apart from price

Can I suggest that if you are basically happy with the BT speeds and service you find the cheapest offer and then ring BT and ask them to match it?

I've yet to find this approach to be unsuccessfull and it does save an awful lot of hassle

Seems , as I suspected, it was the Sky kit in my area as it's the only FTTC based service i've had which has suffered any problems.

I'm glad it's working for you all smile
