Changing away from Hi-Velocity

[link to this post]

I have been with HV for about 3 years now and generally have no real complaints about the service other than support are hard to get hold of outside of office hours. Maybe I'm lucky but up until recently I had close to zero problems - but for the last couple of days my connection has up and down all day long. This *may* be a BT issue but my 2nd line (Orange Broadband) is not affected and I would be pretty sure that they go back to the same exchange!

If I change I will be looking for:

Static IP address (I run services that need a static IP)
8m speed
Highly reliable
24/7 customer support

Not bothered about webspace or email addresses, I won't use any that are provided anyway as I have these services provided elsewhere.

I'm not looking for an unlimited service and expect a usage cap - my HV usage is typically less than 15g a month so a 20g or more cap is fine by me.

1st thoughts were Nildram or Eclipse but I see lots of people having problems with them in the forums although I appreciate that any ISP will get a certain number of complaints so that may not be particularly relevant.

I'm happy to pay

I thought (Hoped, even) that HV had resolved this as I had a period af relative stability (i.e. only losing connection a couple times a day) but this weekend has been appalling again - if I didn't have Orange broadband on my other line I would have had very limited broadband access over the past few days.

I will have a look at the 2 mentioned so far but if anybody has any other suggestions I would be pleased to hear them!

What do you mean by losing conenction? Do you mean that you lose sync or internet connectivity? If connectivity, which realm are you on with Hi-V as I had problems with a Netservices connection which kept losing conenctivity, which was down to a problem on NS' end.

Thanks for the reply, my DG834PN shows a connected ADSL port with up/down speeds but my IP address shows as blank. Manually connecting dows not help, rebooting the router does not help - it will eventually come back by itself but then drops off again maybe minutes later, maybe a coulple hours later. Over the weekend a couple weeks back and again over this weekend the longest the router has ever shown under 'conection time' is a couple hours. My login contains "hivelocity.4adsl.net" if that tells you what realm I am on

Part of the problem is the lack of support at HV, calling them (In office hours) and selecting support often results in talking to accounts, telling them the problem, waiting on hold for ages and then repeating the problem anyway when you do eventually get to speak to a support person. They then promise a call back which never happens and when you call *them* back ask what the status is you get a 'BT say it's working alright mate' type of reply - not particulary professional and absolutely zero help to me watching my connection go up and down like the lifts at canary wharf. Calling them outside of office hours puts you straight through to support but other than that the experience is the same, no call back and no help either.

Shame really, I don't actually want the hassle of moving ISP's but I need a reliable connection which at the moment I am not getting.

Looking at some of the forums both Global and Newnet seem to be popular so maybe I'll be calling one of them some time this week.

Looks like an Entanet connectioon via Hi-V going by your realm. Wouldn't be suprised if it was a DNS type issue.

Good luck with your move though.

Thanks for that! I've just mailed HV for a MAC code so will also have a look at vivaciti as well, if I go with them I'll make sure they know it was through reading comments on here!
