I am currently on a Virgin Media (former ntl:world) 10Mb/~60KB cable net connection (soon to be upgraded to 20Mb/~90KB) and am about to move into a house located in an area where there is no cable coverage. This means I will have to cancel my account with Virgin and go for an xDSL-based net connection. Trouble is I don't know which to go for, as I want to avoid Virgin's DSL one (I heard it's not very good.) Also, I've been with Virgin for over a year so cancelling my account won't be a problem.
I am a heavy net user who does lots of P2P file sharing (read: huge GB up/down stream per month) and uses the net for many other purposes (i.e. research, webmail, video/audio streaming, etc.) I really must choose my next ISP carefully, as I want to get as far as possible from unfair "Fair Usage Policies", and connection disruptions or speed fluctuations cannot be a reality -- everything must run as smoothly as possible. By the way, I will be moving into an area near Manchester's exchange point (post code BB3, Darwen) and my budget allows me to spend up to 40 pounds (excluding line rental.) One-off connection charges are also not a problem.
I've thought of going for Be's BePro but their fair and acceptable usage policy kind of puts me off, though their ~3MB/~320KB package really looks (too) tempting... In addition, they offer one static IP and a modem/router with 4 ethernet ports as part of the package, which is brilliant. However, I'm wondering if they'll cap my speed or raise any questions about my usage (refer to their fair usage policy.)
I need a net connection that includes speed, reliability, no monthly allowances, and no idiotic dictatorial fair usage policies.
Given all this, which ISP should I go for? Any comments/suggestions will be greatly appreciated!
