An LLU provider will give you the best download speeds - if you can use an LLU provider. So it would be wise to actually check what ADSL services you can get first - before parting with any cash.

Use the link I have put below and it will tell you exactly what ADSL services you can get by just putting in your post code or phone number (i.e. it may say "Sky LLU" or "Be LLU" - that means you can use Sky or Be and they are an LLU service).

Link to ADSL services checker.

You may find you can use an LLU provider such as Sky or Be and then get more bang for your bucks.

hmm.... maybe between 4GB and 6GB a month?

I've just been on the phone to Sky and they say if I sign up to their 16MB service (I can apparently only get maximum 1.5MB guaranteed on their service) with free anytime local and national calls I'll be paying

The only caution is the length of the contract. I think most people get a decent service, but if you are one of the unlucky few it can be an expensive mistake. Given that you don't download a great deal I'd be tempted to go with the Sky deal.

yeah that seems a good deal.. i am on 4thenet isp. 8mb . i get 50 gig per month.. but its a soft cap so you can go over also theres no port blocking or traffic shaping, the connection is 20:1 ratio and you get a static ip address. that cost 19.99 a month,,but as i am so near the exchange i might change soon to be-there llu ,,as its only 4 quid a month more and i would get at least 20 mb down and 1.3 mb up.

in the words of Napoleon Dynamite..... "Dang!" - that would be cool. But I'm gonna go with Sky and settle for the maximum I can get (is there any way of checking what really is the maximum that I could get?) which is 1.5MB!

thanks a lot everyone, great help! fastest replies ever, why can broadband customer service not be this good!

Mr Saffron (a moderator here) has a great tool where you can put in your line stats to get a good idea of what speeds you can achieve - here.

So if you are signing up to Sky - the figures in ADSL2+ are what you should get.
