Capping and controlling

[link to this post]

I am just about to move back in with my parents after four years at uni and I need to sort out some broadband for them.

I don't necessarily need a max bandwidth package, what I need is uncapped (I could download up to 50GB in a month on occasions, maybe more) and consistent performance, and personally I'm willing to pay a bit more than the cheapest for a good service!

Be, Orange and Zen do not have LLU in the area (DSL Zone checked) so they are out. Recommendations?

N.B. Last year I was with Tiscali, and I can safely say I received the worst ADSL service I have ever experienced, speeds less than 1MB average (on an 8MB package) which they then throttled(!!!!) in the evenings because we exceeded the unprinted fair usage allowance, and they had outsourced the call centers making complaining extra complicated. (Issue never resolved despite 6 months of hassle and a score of expensive phone calls).

Take a look at a Enta reseller like:

ADSL24 or UKFSN

ADSL24 does look quite good, but I am amazed at the number of services with set usage limits. What's happened in the UK, do people not want unlimited anymore? with the advent of streaming television etc it seems the industry is seizing an opportunity to grab as much money as possible; unlimited net services are now more expensive than they were 18 months ago - this is ridiculous!

Think I might try signing up to one of the 8MB ADSL24 packages and if I find I've used the 'peak' (8AM to 10PM is a LONG peak period) allowance I'll switch to an unlimited 2MB service

I'm sure they do but BT Wholesale's pricing model makes it a non-starter for the sort of money a consumer is prepared to pay.

yes but as you found out it doesn't actually exist anyway. You essentially have to choose between a defined limit / cap, a pay as you go or "inclusive GB" model, or an "unlimited" that uses an FUP or traffic management to limit the excesses of the few.
