Be.02

[link to this post]

I have decided to migrate from Pipex.
My local exchange has LLU Be.
Can anyone recommend Be? Also what is its relationship with 02 - if any?

Cheers.

O2 owns Be.
O2 uses Be's exchange and network infrastructure.
O2 and Be have their own differently-named services at different prices.
O2 supplies a locked-down Speedtouch 780WL, Be supplies a 585v6.
Both are totally unlimited.

Static IPs cost 5/m on O2, Be's lowest package (still unlimited) costs money or is dynamic, Unlimited and Pro have 1 free static IP.

Would you go for Be or O2?
Can I use my own modem/router?

And why would I need a static IP?

If you have to ask you probably don't need one

So is Be ok? Prices seem reasonable.
Can I use my own ADSL modem/router?

Be have a very good reputation on here. They supply a router but you're free to use your own.

It is usually recommended you use the one they supply for the first 14 days. Some form of line optimisation takes place I believe. Then swap back to your own if you want.

Remember whatever you do that you have to return theirs at the end of your contract. Else they bill you 100 for it.

Last point, you don't get free email with Be. They charge something like 2 per month for it, and apparently it is pretty ropey.

Better to get ISP-independent email straight away. Then you can tell all your contacts well before you migrate, and watch out for any you have forgotten. Then you never have to change email address again.

Googlemail is free and a lot of people like it. For something a bit better there are several email providers. Click Purple Cloud in my sig to see mine. Your own .co.uk or .me.uk, (which has more availability), costs 7.50 every 2 years, and email to go with it is 5 per year. Five mailboxes, unlimited aliases, POP3/SMTP/IMAP/Webmail. Spam Assassin on the servers.

Or instead of the email web space starts at 10 per year and includes the email above.

Bob - Newnet Lite, ex Prodigynet. Purple Cloud for domain reg and email and web space.

A locked down router is one that only works for a particular ISP.
