Help on ISP choice

[link to this post]

Hello guys my first time on here and at the min im just looking for a bit of advice on a new ISP.

I mainly use internet for P2P Torrents and some online gaming. I am not tied into contract with a phone provider so can switch my phone and go for combined phone and net package if thats the best route to go down.

LLU is avaiable on my exchange which is http://www.samknows.com/broadband/exchange/NEEHN and im 2.8km (straight line) away from.

I am a sky TV customer already if sky broadband is a decent option, or if entnet is best way to go the peak time cap doesnt bother me.

Any advice and possibly a few different price options would be most helpfull.

Thanks alot
Billy

Yeah, Sky would be alright.

Don't think it would be as good as Be Broadband though.

Fantastic service, and support =) I'm really happy with them, must better than the larger ISPs like AOL and Sky!

If you want to join them and want free connection just pop me an PM =)

*I don't work for them either..... =P*

Thanks

Before we can really make a recommendation we need to know your line stats, to find out what speed you would get on an LLU connection. Putting your phone number into the LLU ISP's web sites doesn't give a very good estimate.

If you don't know how to get them, (they may be in your router GUI), look here or here.

The most important figures are the sync, the attenuation and the Noise Margin (SNRM). Error rates are also useful so best to post the lot. To get the most accurate value for SNRM take it just after a sync/re-sync, but doing that at this time of day is a bad idea, as you will inevitably get a poor sync speed which could mess up your Profile and downloads for days.

So get them as you are, and possibly again during the morning in good daylight. If you get them from your router GUI then no need to re-sync in the morning as it should show them as they are at the time you go into it.

The results of a BT speed test at www.speedtester.bt.com are also useful. At this time of day it might say it is too busy. In any case it takes an age to do anything after you put your phone number in, so don't think it has stuck . Just get us the stats.

I think there's very little between SKY/UK Online and O2/be*.

If you already have SKY tv then I'd suggest them. Likewise if you have an O2 mobile contract then O2 would save you money.

I've been a happy be* customer for over 2 years now but if I was choosing again I'd prob go with SKY - due to the savings I would make having their SKY tv package already.
