Keep Pipex package or switch to Tiscali?

[link to this post]

I currently have the Pipex Midi package (8Mb, 30GB allowance, additional usage charged at 1 per GB) for 19.99 pm. My actual download speeds are usually around 5mb.

Tiscali offer a similar package for 14.99pm (8mb, unlimited downloads).

Obviously it would make sense to transfer to the Tiscali package but I'm a bit nervous about doing this as making any sort of transfer seems to open up a can of worms (judging from postings to this and other forums) regarding connection and billing even though it is all now one company.

Has anybody made this switch and can offer advice?

Leave Pipex/Tiscali entirely, and go with a decent ISP -- we can recommend some to you, depending on your needs and what's available at your exchange. Trust me, if you've had no problems with Pipex, you've got the luck of the Devil (or possibly Nadger)

If your needs are small, give NewNet a look; if you've got Sky Digital and Sky BB have their LLU equipment at your exchange, they're definitely worth a shot; Entanet and Plusnet may also deserve some mention. I'm with Be* but they're only at some exchanges -- their owner O2 could be worthwhile if you've got a phone contract with them

Do not sign up with Tiscali, do not change your package with Pipex as they will renew your contract without telling you and lock you in.

goto samknows and check LLU providers on your exchange, O2 and BE use the same equipment and SKY is also a cheap option all of these offer good reliable service. I am on O2, for 12.50 per month (7.50 if you have a phone) you get a stable and fast connection with Uk free support.

Many thanks for the replies.

I contacted Pipex about moving and I was immediately offered a deal on my existing package - free for 3 months then 7.99 with unlimited downloads.

As I haven't had any major problems with Pipex (and infact, to my astonishment, have found reliability and speed to be much improved since the Tiscali merger) it was an offer I couldn't refuse.

We're in a similar situation and don't know what to do. We're on an old business package on Pipex (works out at about 15 broadband but also have our phone with them), but want to switch to Residential. We were looking at Tiscali (i believe Pipex and Tiscali are owned by the same company though?). We'd like broadband and phone together if possible (without BT line rental).

If we could, we'd get something like Be Unlimited, but it is not available at our exchange (or any LLU like Sky or O2): http://www.samknows.com/broadband/exchange/SSHAW

Would advise avoiding Pipex and Tiscali and everything they stand for, TBH -- if you really need broadband and line rental together, TalkTalk would be the best of a bad bunch

We've not had problems with Pipex (apart from billing issues where they forgot to charge us, then sent threatening letters) - connection has been great though.

We can't get TalkTalk (or any LLU) on our exchange. Well we can get their 15 a month broadband (but with phone this is over 30 a month) and well.. what's the point of switching to them?

Have a look at Plusnet as long as you are not heavy downloaders and basically want to do browsing, email, internet shopping and banking.

They have some good packages though not for me. I prefer to keep my phone with BT and get the best deal I can on separate broadband.

What about deciding what to do then ringing Pipex like the OP did and see if you get a better deal that appeals to you? Again, I wouldn't like to be with Pipex/Tiscali but if it ain't broke for you ....

If you don't get a deal then off you go to wherever you already have lined up. At least you then don't have to look in a hurry.
