Would changing provider make a difference?

[link to this post]

Im on the 16mb adsl2+ bulldog broadband service, meant to be getting 10-11meg. Would it make a difference if i change providers to o2 broadband, BE, Virgin?

heres my stats:
Data rate (Kbps) 4470 984
Noise margin (dB) 9.8 5.2
Output power (dBm) 16.5 12.3
Attenuation (dB) 38.0 25.5
approximately 1.53km from the exchange

Unless there is something seriously wrong with your line, (see later), then:-

O2 - yes.
Be - yes.
Virgin - probably not a good idea.

The data rate of 4470 is very bad for an attenuation of 38, even allowing for the high'ish Noise Margin of 9.8. But thinking about that, the high noise margin may indicate a wider variation in noise than normal and that may indicate a background noise problem as well.

So it would be a good idea if you haven't already done so to get your stats from plugging your router direct into the Test Socket inside the Master Socket, (the socket at the back in this picture), using the short ADSL cable that came with the router. While you are at it check the wires on the back of the removed faceplate as in that pic and follow the instructions there as well. This frequently results in over 2Mbps extra data rate.

If you are using a long phone extension cable do not use it for this test, as such a cable could very well be the problem.
