moving away from o2 - who to go to?

[link to this post]

I've been with Orange for 18 months, they had llu at the exchange (I didnt know) and got a steady 6 megs day and night. I didn't know I was spoiled until seeing some posts on this forum!
Anyway, they really really brassed me off with the appalling customer services and particularly rubbish tech support from India.
I ported out to O2 when I changed my mobile, unfortunately llu not available for O2 at my exchange and no time soon.
I'm getting 6.6 megs every morning, every evening from about 5pm to midnight (when I need it most) I get a steady 0.2 to 0.4 at most megs download and 0.4 upload. I've invoked my 30 day getout but the retentions guy at O2 suggested whoever I go for if not llu I will get the same experience.
I cant bear the thought of going back to Orange (and the contract i'd have to join is 18 months and worse than the one i was on). I dont fancy talktalk or tiscali (the other llu providers on my exchange)
I'm considering plusnet and dont mind if i'm choked at busy times but get something approaching a reasonable speed, anyone out there give me a bit of advice before I make a terrible mistake that I have to live with for 12-18 months....
I'm on the Cross Hills Exchange in West Yorkshire -MYCSH

The retention people at O2 Where not telling lies as the standard of IPstream provisioning in this country is a disgrace .
But there still are good providers like Newnet , Idnet , Zen , but are expensive and have restrictive usage allowance , what ever you go for on IPstream will always be a compromise .
Just make sure you don't sign a 12 month contract with who ever you choice on IPstream as what's good to day can be rubbish the next so leave your options open so you can move if the service goes bad

TalkTalk do have a 18 month contract but have a £70 buy out if you want to leave early , but there telephone support is as bad as Orange if not worse .
But the general consensus on TalkTalk is thous in the know use the TalkTalk members forum to sort problems and line customisations and avoid telephone support all together .

In my town we have also found that Orange LLU performs very well but as you say there telephone support is rubbish but the connection is not so bad if on LLU .

OK i got a total shot in the dark here and advice you to research it a bit more for your self .
Opal Telecom run talktalk LLU network for them but also provide connections to small business and sole traders .
There support is all UK based and they say they have a 100GIG FUP and will provide your line with line rental for £23 a month for a upto 24mb connection .
Down side is its a 2 year contract ( Gulp ) but i don't know if this also has a buy out fee if you want to leave early and i don't actually know of anybody thats connected with them .

But i would say they tick allot of your boxes and are worth a look OPAL LINK

cheers for that, i think i need to be llu really but talktalk and tiscali seem to want me to tie in my landline too, i dont want to do that but maybe i can sort without that.....
needs a bit of digging...., i'll explore this Opal business thing, i do a lot of business from home and proxy into my pc at the office too so could justify to them if they specified it needs to be for business.
its not about saving the odd quid here and there, i just want speed and service... i'll (sort of) happily pay extra for a bit of quality

What is your monthly usage (gigabtes), your typical usage (usenet, torrents?) and price range?

man alive! i'm going round in circles....
spoke to talktalk who offer llu on my exchange and they would not do anything without the phone service tied in.
spoke to tiscali who dont supply a suitable router and the lady i spoke to seemed clueless
spoke to sky who said they would give me the same problem as o2??
spoke to plusnet who said they would not have the same problem....
i dont mind paying a premium if i can get just a few megs of download speed consistently (I've been used to a steady 6megs but would accept less...)
at the moment i am looking to go for plusnet but am a bit worried about bits i've read on the net, should i be wary of plusnet?

Well I have plusnet and it's fine so far however I was able to get on a package which has a 30 day notice period this changed soon after and I believe there is now either a 12 month or 18 month tie in depending on which package you choose.
I was previously with Zen and they are a really good isp no problems at all, the best I've been with, just got a bit pricey for me needing to cut costs a bit.
If you don't use the net during the day aaisp might be worth a look but the daytime allowance is very low but you do get 100gig usage after 6pm, I would have gone for it but as I am home during the day it wasn't suitable but I have heard good things about them
