Advice to save money

[link to this post]

I am currently with Zen for broadband on their max package (£34) for 8Mb (getting about 6.5Mb. I have no problem with them at all and have been a customer for years. The only reason I am looking is to save some money. Sky seems an option on their LLU at £15. Does anyone have any opinion on this and whether Sky LLU is OK? They seem to have an OK rating on LLU...

My exchange has these options for LLU
AOL: Enabled
O2 / Be: Enabled as of 09/05/2007
Orange: Enabled as of 01/02/2007
Sky / Easynet: Enabled as of 04/03/2007
TalkTalk (CPW): Enabled as of 25/11/2006
Tiscali: Enabled as of 01/05/2008

Also is it true thats its harder to move once you are unbundled as the PAC code regulations dont apply?

Any help appreciated!

If you go for O2, BE, Sky or Easynet/UKonline you'll only be partly unbundled (the voice line will still be connected to BT Wholesale equipment).
MAC rules (aren't PAC codes for mobile phones????) still apply, if you leave one of the above LLU ISPs they provide you with a MAC number for you to give to your new ISP.

As for cost saving....
If you have SkyTV, they'll be one of the cheapest (the Sky Max package is unlimited and costs £10 a month to SkyTV customers who sign up to have any Sky Talk calls package - even the free one).

If you have an O2 mobile phone (pay monthly or pay as you go), their products will be less than a tenner a month.

Both Sky and O2 have 12 month minimum contracts.
If you don't want this, the BE Unlimited product (£17.50 a month) has a rolling 3-month notice period.

The 3 month contract seems more acceptable in case of problems than being stuck in for 12 months but when I go to BE and do a line check they indicate my line should only get speeds upto 2.5mb's. As I am getting 6.5mb on Zen currently is this figure wrong or does it alter because its unbundled/llu etc and different technology?

Shopuld I worry about the speed - I dont want to go from 6.5 to 2.5 !!

Thanks again for help!

Ignore the BT checkers - The results are given using BT's own line length data (which is often gibberish - mine came out at less than 250kbps estimation, and I can connect at up to 5Mbps).
Your current line attenuation will give a better estimation than any figure BT's database makes up.
If you're connecting at 6.5Mbps using Zen's BT Wholesale product, you'll almost certainly hit at least 8Mbps (possibly more if your line attenuation is below about 45dB).

You could always go for BE's Value product (£13.50 a month).
It does have a 12 month contract, but if you want to leave early, you simply regrade (for free - just paying the extra monthly cost) to BE Unlimited (£17.50 a month), then you can give 3 months notice.

If you have a 02 mobile contract up to 8m/b is £7.50 a month, im very happy with it and my pings are low and the upload is 988kbs download 3500 kbs which is the max for my distance and line noise.
