plusnet

[link to this post]

Hi.

I want to leave Virgin because they throttle my gaming speed during peak hours so much that its unplayable.

so I was thinking about joining plusnet but wondered if they're any good? also..

1) it says unlimited usage. is it really unlimited? surely there must be some sort of cap on my downloads?

2) it says it prioritises gaming traffic but it is still limited to 2mbps during peak times. is this good? will i notice the difference between that and the usual 6-7mbps.

3) spose this is a general question, if i get my mac code and sign up to plusnet, how long is it going to take before i'm connected? i've seen on google some people saying a few hours, some people saying 2 weeks.

thanks.

Hi there,

I'll leave others to comment in terms of user experience.

In terms of your questions:

1) Yes it really is unlimited. Though certain types of traffic are managed at peak times, you can find out what and when here.

2) 2Mbps is more than enough for gaming, gaming performance is more about latency than pure speed.

3) Standard migrations take 5-7 days. This is delayed if you elect to pay by DD only, as we'd need to wait for your DD to be activated first.

When I joined PN I did the changeover (from Pipex!) without a second of noticeable downtime.

Service is boringly reliable although I do not do anything particularly adventurous! Watch out for the contract and see if you can get 12 months use your own router as opposed to 18!

PN team on these forums are excellent.

It's throttled more than Virgin so your user experience will be even worse.

1) No need to limit because the connection is so heavily throttled. There aren't enough hours in the month to download a significant amount.

2) No you will find that games are unplayable unless you do absolutely nothing else like download patches or use iplayer and even then you'll struggle.

3) It will take around 10 days regardless of who you switch to but you won't have any downtime in that 10 days.

Hi,

I use Plusnet for gaming and on decent UK servers get a stable ping of 15-25ms depending on the server. The connection is very stable and reliable. I moved to Plusnet from TalkTalk and was amazed at the difference for gaming especially during peak hours which are as good as off peak for Plusnet.

I am on the Pro package and the only thing to be careful of is if a game is not set to high priority on Plusnets network it can run slowly. If you let them know they quickly put game onto high priority and all is good again.

I'm on Unlimited. Gaming is fine and ping's are always very low (15ms with interleaving turned off). Streaming is also fine.
