Phoneline + Broadband for gaming

Hi,

Have recently moved into a new-build, there is a BT master socket and have have hooked up phone but no dailing tone, so thinking I will have to pay new line install fee. Currently using 3 mobile broadband on a 5Gb plan, but struggling to stay within 5gb and thats without any online gaming. Could see usage go up to 15-20Gb, and also good posibility will end up with a house-mate using internet as well.

So looking for new phoneline + BB provider with good ping times, planning to play a far bit of Source games (e.g. Counter Strike).

My Exchange is http://www.samknows.com/broadband/exchange/THFB

Be/O2 LLU for broadband. BT for phone/line rental. Search for user MKD and his comparison document between Be and O2 packages.

Found the guide + some more info.

Currently 50/50 between BE/O2 at moment then. Have O2 pay-monthlycontract but switching to PayG as got a phone from work, but want to keep old number. However, BE is better for gaming as can get fast-path profile on unlimited and Pro packages.

Question, Does Post office land-line count as a BT phone-line, e.g. can I get line reconnected via PO, and then activate BB via BE or O2 online without having to change line to BT. Its just PO line install fee's are less, and only monthly contract + want to try get quidco cashback on BB.

I don't know whether Be can use a PO installed line. I have a vague feeling that the answer is no. If you don't get a definite answer here in a reasonable time it's worth asking that question in the Be forum. See http://forums.thinkbroadband.com/beunlimited.html

Yes

I agree, yes - a Post Office line counts as BT for the OP's broadband.

To the OP - Re Be gaming mode, which removes interleaving (which you can't do on O2), it is even better to get interleaving turned off by support, as they also disable some other error checking that may have a fractional effect on latency. Whether or not that is a good idea depends on the quality of your actual line once installed.

You might get some idea of line length/exchange distance by putting the post code into samknows.

If you don't want a fixed line then see if you can upgrade to the 15GB plan with a contract, but state that you have already had the dongle on a month to month and see if you can account this into the time lengh of the contract. Other than that if you want you can get a fixed line for free from BT until 31st september 2009 .

Latency on mobile?

The free BT line is an 18-month contract requiring 10 calls per month.

The mobile broadband is not the same as my O2 contract, won't go into the details, but have ended up with 2 mobile accounts (O2 and Three). O2 contract is month to month currently. Mobile broadband is with Three and will be cancelled once the contract is up in around 7 months.

I have looked at the free line install with BT, don't think its worth it. You still have to pay for the line-install up front then have to make 10 chargable calls per month + 18 month contract.

From what I can tell, PO line counts as BT line, so BE/O2 BB can be activated, but will double check over in the BE forums to be sure.

According to Sam Knows, my flat is around 777 metres from the exchange Guess I should be able to get decent connect on fast-path and might be able to disable some of the error checking.
