Which Broadband

[link to this post]

OK im having a nightmare trying to find a broadband provider at a decent rate. The Max our line can handle is 8mb so am happy with either 2mb or 8mb.

Our premises are on the Isle of Wight so we dont have a decent cable provider.

I was told o2 or Be was good

The o2 package was £7.34 which was perfect but because we are on the island it jumped to £17!

I then tried Be Internet and they dont offer anything on the Isle of Wight.

I am after a package with the following features:

- 2mb or 8mb Connection
- Free Wireless Router
- Unlimited Downloads
- Around £10 a Month

Any ideas and recommendations would be great

This is the Exchange I am on:

You're not charged more because you're on the IoW... it's because Be/O2 have not unbundled your exchange. wink

Do you just surf and send emails? or do you download via P2P (i.e bit torrent)?

We download via Torrent quite a bit and also use it for everyday things including running our ecommerce store.

I fear you are looking for the impossible. The only three suppliers that can approach that price are:

O2 (mobile owner deal) via LLU (which is unavailable at your exchange).
Plusnet Value = 10Gb usage (+ unmetered overnight) at £5.99 since yours is a market 3 (ie. high choice) exchange.
TalkTalk Full-LLU 40Gb usage IF you also give them your phone calls and line rental (and don't expect their international bundle for free as with their pure phone packages).

TalkTalk is a 18month contract and its £70 to escape early. Getting the line back to BT afterwards can be expensive and/or complicated.

Your best bets for higher usage would probably be: Plusnet Unlimited-but-throttled (your p2p will be slow) £16, Vivaciti Surfwise 75Gb for about £18->21 (website is now confused), Titan have a 100Gb version of the surfwise product. I can't recall any other high usage accounts (available to you) below £25 or £30 or more.

Who are you with now?

You best try Orange LLU @ £10 for 10 Gig usage or AOL LLU @ £15 for "Unlimited" usage.

1999: Freeserve 48K Dial-Up => 2005: Wanadoo 1 Meg BB => 2007: Orange 2 Meg BB => 2008: Orange 8 Meg BB

Problem is I think I would use the 10gb usage to quick.

Also heard AOL service/support is [censored] is this right? Also do you have to install all the [censored] AOL software?

Exactly, you get what you pay for. £10 buys you limited; £15 buys you an "Unlimited" 60 Gig FUP.

Re: AOL: My daughters are on it and because they wanted parental controls they loaded its s/ware. However, with a wireless router, as supplied, the router takes care of the connection, so I can't see you would need any of their s/ware on the PC. I'm sure it's been done; look it up in the AOL forum.

EDIT: See this: http://forums.thinkbroadband.com/aol/t/1604859-using...

If you are using the line for business purposes also, you should consider www.opal.co.uk

They use TalkTalk LLU but don't have traffic management and allow unlimited downloads.

They are also very good value, at £20/Month for line rental AND upto-24Mbit ADSL.

Certainly the best, cheapest, fastest option considering the LLU presence at your exchange wink

You'll find a lot of business grade connections / contacts are like that.

Look at NTL:Telewest Business for example. Unfortunately 'tis the trend of the market wink

Still looks like a good deal and best option available on that exchange, don't you think?
