ADSL Link
Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 16379 kbps 1101 kbps
Line Attenuation 17.0 dB 11.4 dB
Noise Margin 6.0 dB 8.5 dB

Holy Mary! That sync speed is way below par for an attenuation of 17db. On my TalkTalk LLU line, my router syncs at 18.5 meg on an attenuation of 29db @ 6db noise margin. Perhaps its time to change isp's? smirk

No kidding. It's the shortest line I've ever had, it is about level in performance with a line over twice as long, and is beaten by quite some distance by a very crosstalky 21dB line and a 24dB line by quite some distance, both of those hit 22 - 24Mb at 3 - 6dB margin.

It's a common story to be honest, Sky lines sync significantly lower than other ISPs when people migrate to Sky and even when the line is uncapped as much as possible they still tend to underperform - their forums are full of stories about it.

Probably Sky going for cheap routers customised to look nice but that aren't very compatible with the chipsets in their MSANs - although my upload speed is capped at 1.3Mb allegedly this is impossible to achieve due to chipset incompatibility.

Between that and Sky really not caring less what speed people sync up at, the lower the better in fact as it saves them bandwidth and powering the lines, the better.

I dont think CPE makes much difference, have tried syncing a few and get similar results 200 - 300Kbps difference around the 7.5Meg area.

Many thanks to all for the helpful comments.
I have recently done tests in the test socket with various routers. My router cable is high quality half a metre, and at a 6dB margin 4683kbps is the best I get. My Netgear DG834Gv4 router gives the best performance. My extension cable is shielded twisted wire, I use ADSLnation filtered faceplates and my router is on a UPS. Given that I understand I have to use Sky router which may not do so well and get a 7dB target margin it looks as if I may well get less by changing to Sky. As well as not having a static IP address (so no tbb quality monitor) and losing full functionality with RouterStats. So I reckon I will do best to stay where I am for now (my usage does not justify fibre)
