So Plus.net seems like the place to be these days? If I order essentials fibre the only things that it throttles are p2p/usenet and external ftp? I think a 40gb allowance would be plenty for me and the missus and aslong as Xbox Live isnt affected then I think I will place an order.

FTP; Usenet and P2P doesn't sound very safe on 40GB fibre. Have you any idea how much you use on O2?

I don't do gaming, much FTP and no Usenet/P2P but from what I see here even XBox can use a fair bit when you download any games/updates. Unless you do all downloads at night. IIRC uploads are counted as well.

As you are in one of the low-cost areas at least you get the headline prices. The difference between 40/10 and 80/20 is only £2.50pm, which removes the few hours per day of speed restriction anyway. What is the speed estimate you get?

My broadband basic info/help site - www.robertos.me.uk | Domains,website and mail hosting - Tsohost.
Connection - Plusnet UnLim Fibre (FTTC). Sync ~ 54.2/15.2Mbps @ 600m. - BQM

Hi there,

It's as RobertoS says - we can't guarantee I'm afraid as there is a tiny chance there'll be a problem (if there is we can chase it and will do all we can to get it moved over, but we need to set expectation correctly) but it is a tiny chance. You should be absolutely fine though, and we'll definitely keep an eye on it as it goes through.

Must admit I was going to post similarly to RobertoS - if you're going to be streaming video at all I'd recommend thinking about Unlimited as streaming does use a lot of bandwidth. Likewise with downloading, though that's easier to monitor.

If you're just gaming though you should be fine, but bear in mind downloading games/demos on Xbox Live can also be very bandwidth intensive.

Do all these ISPs allow you external SSH access? It's a must for me and their websites aren't great at technical info like that. I would appreciate any advice.

Ok so say I go for the unlimited fibre option, as you both have said I didnt take into account downloads, YouTube and catch up tv, getting a smart tv with these built in features will make it very easy to watch programs that have been missed also counting towards a 40gb allowance with the essentials package, I think unlimited would probably be the best choice.

Would it be recommended to pay the line rental upfront even though it makes a first payment of near 200 big ones.

What would be the savings/benefits over Sky broadband?

Just noticing the benefits Sky seem to only offer 40.9Mbps were as P/N offer 60Mbps.

'Want free activation?

Take fibre broadband, and add one of our phone packages to get free fibre broadband activation.

We'll even include a wireless router worth £40 - just pay for the P&P (£5.99)'

When does this apply, as I said the first payment is for £200 so getting £50 knocked off the price would be helpful.

I dont use FTP or anything like that, I was just saying what the restrictions are from the link I was given: http://www.plus.net/support/broadband/speed_guide/do...

The speed estimate I get is 60 down 19.5 up. 9.99 for the first 3 months then 19..99 after, so 1p cheaper than Sky.

Hi there,

We don't block any ports on the service, forwarding port 22 to an internal IP shouldn't be a problem (I do it).

Hi there,

If you pay line rental up front it works out that you're paying £10.99 a month rather than the £14.50 you'd pay with Sky (or with ourselves, if you didn't want to take the line rental saver offer). So savings would be £3.51 a month for the year, so 3.51*12= £42.12 over the year.

As for the free fibre activation, as long as you're taking phone as well as broadband from us the fibre activation is free.

Hope that helps.
