And Zen do an unlimited FTTC there is a surcharge if you don't take their telephone line product, but if static IP, custom reverse DNS are what you after then its an option.

I know which LLU providers are available. Without taking over the line? Virgin Media FTTN is avalailble. Your fellow-resident is happy about the trenching for the co-ax? The people in the area are generally happy with it?
PlusNet "deals" are only with line rental, but there is a broadband-only option as others have shown.

"custom reverse DNS"; please explain this in more detail.

Reverse DNS is a lookup from IP address to a name. If you have static IP (all Zen IP addresses are static), most ISPs allow you to set the name returned from a reverse DNS lookup on your IP address(es).
Zen allow custom reverse DNS, though the forward DNS must return the IP address in question otherwise the Zen portal will reject the reverse DNS mapping.
In other words, if I had a Zen IP address of 10.11.12.13 and davidw.example.org.uk looked up to 10.11.12.13, I could set the reverse DNS of 10.11.12.13 to davidw.example.org.uk

Indeed so (albeit implicit in my post) - as we both stated, you have to add the headline charge for the FTTC package (which is the price you pay as part of an FTTC and phone bundle) on top.

Just it made me blink and stop, which isn't good . Then I realised I recognised the £5.40. Otherwise it would have been hard to work out what I agree was implicit.

The road and several properties have VM fibre and my fellow resident is happy to leave Broadband to me....so long as the proesent phone provider is retained.

I'd speak to a few neighbours about the VM if you haven't done so. In some areas it seems to be brilliant for everyone. Other areas poor for all, and I mean for years. I did ask if those near you were happy with VM.
I know several people (pre-FTTC existing) stick with it round here but vow they wouldn't have it at their new place, and a few who have switched to FTTC since that became available. (50Mbps or so connections on FTTC).
