Vista and Drivers

I'm looking to put the latest vista beta on my pc. The question has to be about drivers though. I'd intend 'upgrading' to Vista from XP Pro (The xp pro has everything that I'd need installed - software, drivers, etc, etc). Would the vista work OK as an upgrade with all the xp pro stuff would you say?

I Know that noone's going to say for sure, but I'm planning to take an exact image of the c drive in my machineusing acronis so if it all goes pete tong I can at least revert. Just would be good to know what my chances of success might be ;-)

If you don't know the answers to these sorts of questions then I strongly suggest you steer clear of the Visat Beta. Beta software testing is for people who know what they are doing and who don't whinge when it goes tits up.

I have a reasonable knowledge of what I'm doing - os wise. Having said that, everyone has to start somewhere, as I am with Vista. As I said in my original post, I was asking the question in an attempt ot benefit from others expert knowledge, if you feel that you don't wish to share any of your knowledge, then fine, but please, pelase don't make uninformed and incorrect assumptions concerning a) - my abilities and b) - my apparent whining when it goes wrong!

If you read my post again, I'm sure you'll see that in fact I was looking for information on my chances of success - a wise man always tries to benefit from others who have passed and experienced this previously rather than blindly charging on like a bull in a china shop.

Well said. Given you stated you intended to use TI to image your disk before starting, I think the response you got was completely uncalled for and unhelpful.

Sorry I can't give you any information, I've no intention of jumping into Vista, but the one person I know who tried it found it very unstable and gave up.

I haven't tried it personally but I read on another forum that if you go the upgrade route all the XP drivers are retained.

Can't help personally; however, have a look in the MS TechNet Vista forums.

Do you intend to upgrade XP to Vista or install Vista from scratch? AFAIK, the latter is the best way to go as the former is generally regarded by most places I've seen it discussed to be the worst idea in the history of bad ideas.

the best thing to do is to a create a new partition and try vista as a clean install. Just cos the drivers may install they may no t work.

I presently have installed Vista Beta 2 as a dual boot system. You do need Vista drivers for especially for graphic cards. I find it very stable considering it is a Beta the only major problem I have is using my Epson 6400 printer which at the moment is a no no. But from my little experience is if you want to use it definitely dual boot. It is a pleasant experience. The only other thing I can think of is AV software, most dont work. Pc-Cillin do one but the best one is Avast who will let you register free for 12 months. The one I normally use is NOD32 which they say will work if you install it a certain way but it does not.
I would say is give it a go it s a worthwhile experience
