Is it possible to block access to one particular programme?
A certain programme is constantly 'phoning home to update, and there is
nothing that is accessible to prevent this happening.
Using XP SP3 and a 2Wire 2700HGB router.

Just block it in Windows Firewall. You may have to click on the "Add a Program" button to get the program onto the list of exceptions (and then make sure that it isn't checked).

For info, what is the program?

get a free firewall...plenty about.
or add the address it's dialling to to the hosts file

Check if the programme has an option for manual update rather than automatic update.

I'd be interested to know what the program is if it's bypassing Windows Firewall. Actually, I'd be inclined to remove such a program from my PC - if it's bypassing Windows Firewall goodness knows what else it's doing.

I thought windows firewall was 1 way only...once an app was on the PC the firewall will allow unrestricted outbound calls?!

I think you must be right. The firewall on Windows 7 claims to be able to block outgoing programs, but I can't get it to work. Never mind, there are plenty of other firewalls; I'm sure that one of them will do the job.
Personally I'd get rid of any program that doesn't allow you to turn off automatic update checking.

I think turning the 'call home feature' is necessary for some copied 2nd hand games to work properly..
...allegedly!

Hi, use the Free ZoneAlarm, I would not be without it, I find it very effective and it has
a neat real easy to use interface.

Spot on there.... On further investigation it appears that the older version of Paint Shop Pro that I had donated is a cracked copy.
Well at least I know my way round XP firewall.

If you know where 'Home' is add the entry
127.0.0.1 homeurl
in your hosts file usually found at c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc

Problem is, I have no idea where "home" actually is.
But may be something connected with Protexis Licensing.

If you used Zone Alarm (free) firewall, you would know (I suspect you would with others too), and could block it.
