IP Conflict

[link to this post]

Good morning, some guidance if I may please on an IP Conflict.

Currently have a laptop and tower both running XP Pro from the old style white Sky router, both wired - over the past few weeks the tower is repeatedly coming up with IP Address Conflict and or Limited or no Connectivity

I have tried to repair, renew, reselect an IP Address but the only solution seems to be reboot the router and even then, sometimes it doesn't work.

I have replaced the onboard LAN with a network card but no difference. I believe Sky use dynamic IP Addresses if that makes a difference.

Any ideas on how to solve this?

Thanks - Blue

why dont you try switching off the DHCP setting on the router?

then just manually set your 2 PC's I.P. address' to some static values above 192.168.0.1, eg use .2 for the desktop and .3 for the laptop

if you dont know how to do any of this, then google is your friend, or read on for a quick (remeber i am writing this in the middle of the night) guide

router
click "lan ip setup" on lefthand side of welcome page
uncheck dhcp

PC's
open control panel, rightclick your network card, properties
select tcpip, properties
change to use following ip's
192.168.0.2 (or 3 for other machine)
subnet 255.255.255.0
gateway
192.168.0.1

dns
192.168.0.1 (or if you have an alternate dns choice fit here)

that should be a brief cover, there is also an option to leave on dhcp and set up an alternate ip if there is a problem with the dhcp or if the dhcp goes down but it just takes longer to get an ip address

i have the original sky router and xp pro so the above should cover ya

disclaimer
i may not have had any drink tonight - but it is still the middle of the night so follow the instructions at your own peril

Odd. Are both machines configured to obtain addresses automatically?

Nothing Sky do should have any bearing on this but I'm a bit puzzled. Do you know how NAT works?

i am not an expert in everything IP wise but i could get by manually configuring your network if needed - pm me or reply here if you need anymore info

if you dont want to risk doing something you are not sure of try one machine at a time..... you may switch off DHCP on the router for both machines but the lease should still be valid for the ip address on the machine you dont tinker with - ie the ip address your router gave out on DHCP will still be valid for a bit.....and if all else fails just go back to how it was
