Adobe Acrobat is killing my computer

[link to this post]

I'm running Vista Business on a Sony SZ5MN/B. After 2 years of regular use I've developed a problem when using Adobe Acrobat 8 Standard edition. When I open a PDF as soon as I click anywhere in the document Adobe stops responding and causes the computer to hang for so long that the only way I can carry on is to hold down the power switch and reboot the machine. I've tried reparing Adobe via the control panel, uninstalling it and reinstalling, and have even done a system restore to the oldest possible point. None of these has solved the problem. Any ideas as to what is going on?

Use Revo uninstaller to totally remove adobe, delete all traces of adobe in your program files. Install newest adobe version (9.2.0) which will also update over the previous v8 and give you a new, better, version.

acrobat standard is one of the paid for versions I believe - would have thought free upgrade

Well spotted, I read that as free edition. In this case, i'd reccomend the route above, then uninstalling 9.2.0 (if free upgrade is not avavilable), then putting on v8. Hoping that 9.2.0 will have fixed a file which is perhaps causing 8.2.0 to crash.

I seriously don't get why Adobe continue to make Acrobat Reader so [censored]. I have yet to come across someone who doesn't have a bad word or another to say about it. v9 has had some nice improvements in fairness, but who remembers the old v6 and before when if you clicked a dodgy link, you could count on having to use task manager to kill the process. v9 still does that sometimes, having said that.

Even the installer is a big gigantic fuss over nothing. Just give me an MSI and sod off with your optimizing nonsense.

Dump it, paid version or not. There are lots of pdf readers around that are less resource hungry.

Install a small freebie .pdf reader, such as Sumatra

The OP is actually referring to Adobe Standard which creates and reads pdfs, it's not the same as Adobe Acrobat which is a reader only.

I think the OP may be right actually. The free version is called Adobe Reader - no acrobat in the name. Acrobat is used for paid versions.

If I remember correctly!
