Hi gents,
I've just bought a networkable hard drive for my parents so they can back up their various files and photos, currently stored between a couple of desktop systems they use.
I've been through the standard Windows backup utility which, despite doing what it says on the tin, only seems to back up to an image file. As such, they can only access these backups by 'restoring' this image which isn't really ideal - I'm just trying to sort out a simple clone of files/folders which updates periodically, to keep it as simple as possible should they need to access them in future. This is also so that they can use the Web Access feature to access these files from elsewhere.
Does anyone know of a simple way to achieve this? Presumably some third party application might be the way forward - just something simple with a schedule feature would be great.
Any help much appreciated, thanks.

Spot on - must've been the only one I hadn't tried.
Much obliged, thanks.

Have a look at Genie Timeline. It's like Time Maschine on OS X, but for Windows.

Looks good that, will take a look at it myself!

Taking a look at both of them. Both look interesting. Vista Backup is completely useless.

7s backup seems perfectly adequate.

I use SyncToy which is free from Microsoft

Yep, me too and it works great but there is no scheduling option..

There is - just use Windows Task Scheduler http://www.pchell.com/support/synctoy.shtml

Sweet, thanks.. Now all I need to do is somehow get SyncToy to sync up with my SkyDrive account..

Cobian Backup is one I have used on a number of XP machines. It can be scheduled to run at a particular time each week/day/month.

When I looked at SyncToy, admittedly a year or two ago, there was a serious deficiency when using bidirectional sync (contribute mode). It used last accessed rather than last updated to decide the direction of synchronisation. This means an older version of a file could overwrite the updated one in some cases. Clearly not a good feature!
Can someone clarify whether the current version is free of this problem?

I resorted to buying GoodSync Pro and never looked back. An unrealised bonus was it can even perfectly sync emails across different clients on different machines thereby eliminating the need for IMAP.
I think I paid about a tenner for it and that certainly was a tenner well spent.
The free version is limited to 100 files and 3 "jobs".

I'd agree that KR is a pretty nifty tool, especially considering the price.
Our Ms Kenworthy offers a pretty good little selection of small, effective and above all, free tools for all sorts of little things.

Ive been looking at Goodsync so cheekily I thought I'd ask a question of one who uses it .
One feature I need is the ability possibly wrong terminology is to have a number of jobs that each synchronises a number of different pairs of folders. For example:
Job1: analyses and synchronises folders aaa and bbb and ccc on drive C: with folders aaa and bbb and ccc on drive H:
Job2: analyses and synchronises folders zzz and yyy and xxx and www on drive D: with folders zzz and yyy and xxx and www on drive G:
At the moment I cant see any way of doing this with Goodsync. I guess what I seek is the ability to add further folder pairs to a Jobs list.
Is this possible with Goodsync? If so how do I do it?

Not a Goodsync answer but...
Syncback, particularly if you get one of the paid-for versions, does all sorts (depending on what version you go for) including scheduling different folders to backup or synchronise. You define what you want it to do and where to back it up/sync to and what schedule you want for each "profile".
You can also set it up to run a backup when a particular drive is detected so you can do a backup simply by connecting the relevant external drive.

It's not the case that the Backup facility in Windows 7 will only restore to an image. You can find individual files to restore.

it is possible and fairly simple. I haven't got Goodsync on this box so i'm guessing a little but in essence it's a case of syncing the actual drives in question and then using the include/exclude feature to select which folders are actually sync'd.
