Identifing Windows Version

[link to this post]

Hello guys,

I've got a laptop that I need to re-image. I think its Windows 7 but the key stamped to the bottom only has the windows key but the rest of the label looks like it's missing. When The laptop boots it doesnt say which version just goes into recovery.

If I was to boot into a live ubuntu disk, can I tell from the system files? Ideal version IE home / pro etc.

Thanks in advance

James

It does start the recovery but then never actually finishes. It's not my laptop. I've just been handed it and asked to fix. It's a samsung N150, google seems to say that they are shipped with windows 7. It's trying to estalish which version matches that key, any ideas?

Thanks

If you can't run the command prompt on system recovery. Have a look at the Windows update text document (root\windows), you should find details of the OS version and the OS product type.

Alternatively, if it won't boot, have a look at \BOOT.INI.

Alas, no boot.ini for W7 (nor Vista), they use boot configuration data, you can use tool bcdedit to open/edit this.

It doesn't matter which version that you use; they're all in ones. The key decides the version that is installed.

Not with some OEM/enterprise editions, the install process is locked to the specific version.

Every Win7 installation disk that I've seen are all versions and combined retail/OEM. The only difference is that of x86/x64 versions but these use the same key anyway.
I daresay that there are exceptions to this rule.

If it BSODs once a day or so, it's W95/98/ME. If BSOD on boot, XP SP1. wink

I had a look at that document and coudlnt see anything.

It may however be a windows XP as it has a document and settings folder. Did vista have D&S folder as I know 7 doesnt.

As XRaySpeX (who must be prescient smile), states above, have a look at the boot.ini file if it's a XP machine.

That was the case for Vista, not Windows 7.

Windows 7 doesn't ask for the key until after the end of the install.

XP has a \D&S folder at root level; Vista has a \Users folder at root and a D&S Junction (sort of hard link to \Users) at the same level.

There are versions for download on the MS website which only contain a specific version, so it is quite possible.

If you have a specially customised version its done with a control file that can be removed (ei.cfg)

I suspect all the media I've been testing (from PC makers, or from MSDN) don't have this file!

Thanks - that looks like it would do the job, however I now think this N150 is a windows xp OS and not 7 due to D&S folder frown

Is there anyway to legally re-image it with just the key?

My N150 is running Win7. You just need a Windows iso - the licence is tied to the device.
