As we all know there is a How big is your one? thread
Now here is a How big is your one? with a twist
View the source code for | Text | 1
| view-source:file:///C:/Windows/winsxs/ |
in your browser 11749 lines
|
|
|
Luckily the NTFS file system can cope with tens of millions of files on a volume reasonably well, so 10k shouldn't be too much of an issue for it.

Thump
"file:///C:/Windows/winsxs/"
or whatever the path is into your browser. Then right click, view source and you might have the number of lines. If not, paste the source to a text editor with line numbers.
Yes it's that simple.

I just dropped thew text (without the leading"1 " into the URL box in Firefox and upcame the listing. View Source then showed me the raw lines and line count.
Mind you the line count is just 3 more than the number of filers in WINSXS, these seem to just be the three 'housekeeping' lines.

OIC. So the word "browser" in OP needs to be replaced by"FF" as following YOUR v. clear instructions does not work in IE.

Looks like it. In IE dropping file:///C:/Windows/winsxs/ into the URL opens a Windows Explorer window showing WINSXS, exactly the same as opening it directly in Windows Explorer.
As it doesn't open it in the actual browser window, the view source feature doesn't help.

Sorry my bad
Yes you are right It appears the | Text | 1
| view-source:file:///C:/Windows/winsxs/ |
does indeed fail to work with IE: I originaly tested using SnWare Iron which is a Chrome based browser but FF or other suitable browser should suffice

Wouldn't "dir" be simpler?

Would you care to elaborate kind sir

"dir" in a command prompt is the simplest way to do a directory listing. Why use a web browser for such a simple task?

Why bother with all this browser-specific messing-about, which only tells you how many folders at top level, when you can directly use the Properties of Windows Explorer to tell you everything about the WinSxS folder including : winsxs
