I'm beginning to wonder whether MS is at war with Creative or just me.
Anybody else got a Soundblaster Z series soundcard?
If so do you have problems after Windows updates. More often than not I have to spend the better part of an hour uninstalling and re-installing the drivers.
It's never the same problem twice, this time my headphones were completely disabled. In the past the update has disabled the soundblaster and tried to feed audio to my monitor which doesn't have any audio at all.

It is creative to blame - they have published the wrong drivers to Windows Update before and I pointed it out to them and it took them months to sort it out. You're best bet is raising an official tech support query with them and be persistent. They will fob you off at the start like "oh just disable windows update" but keep on at them and eventually they feed it back to their devs.

I've sent them a support request to ask if there is any danger of a fully compatible Win10 driver package being released.

leave the drivers alone
I do leave them alone. It's after MS updates that they are broken.

Turn driver updates off. google for procedure under win 10. I had a problem with the latest update and nvidia drivers so rolled them back to december 2017 and turned off driver updates. I was getting spontaneous reboots because of the graphics driver.

I'm the opposite and always run with the latest driver/BIOS version etc. They are released for good reason - generally to fix bugs.

I was feeling tetchy yesterday . Not only had the last update completely disabled my headphones but the download link on the creative web page would not respond so I couldn't get hold of the latest drivers. I tried again yesterday evening and the link was working so all is good now.
It's just so annoying when this keeps happening again and again.

I agree with you regarding manufacturers drivers, but quite how Microsoft think they can write better drivers for client kit than the makers of it has always been beyond me.
No Microsoft replacement for proprietary drivers, in any version of Windows, has ever worked properly for me. The prime example being 3-in-1 printers, where some generic driver from MS for the basic printing functions of all such HP machines replaces the originals or their HP versions. Copying is usually not affected, printing can lose some functionality, and scanning can fail completely except into Word. Device Manager will report the machine as up to date and working .

Are you saying that OEMs include their own drivers in a Windows Update? I was under the assumption that a WU contained only MS changes and bug fixes.
If so why hasn't anyone mentioned this before?

In general, the drivers supplied with Windows, and by Windows Update, are written by the hardware manufacturers not by Microsoft. It would be well-nigh impossible for Microsoft to write and maintain these drivers using in-house resources. And there would be little point in them doing so when they can obtain this software from the people who know all the ins and outs of the hardware they manufacture.
These drivers tend to be a little behind the curve and not so cutting-edge as the ones from the manufacturer's web site.
But there are some generic drivers for very standardised hardware (e.g. an ATA disk controller, a generic VESA display driver, or a USB controller) that are written by Microsoft.

The release date of the latest drivers for my Soundblaster was 25 Jan 17. Since then there have been Windows updates that have not caused me any problems. Seems inconsistent to me.

Sounds like you've been lucky. A lot of people have had such problems. E.g. https://www.tenforums.com/drivers-hardware/87413-los...
Sounds like Creative are the problem rather than Microsoft.

There's an upside to the irritation, audio both through my speakers and headphones is now better than it was before .

Yes of course OEM include their own drivers in Windows Update. Microsoft don't write all these drivers.

MS may have written generic drivers than enable the hardware to work but only just work.
If OEMs include their own drivers why is it best to go to the OEM site and download from there, are they not the same bits of code?

The drivers supplied by Windows Update tend to be older, and have less features, than the ones direct from the manufacturer.
But don't get the impression that the OEM drivers are not going to cause problems. There have been several instances of an OEM driver causing problems. But people do like to moan about Microsoft (and yet they continue to use their software).

The thing is that if an OEM driver doesn't work properly on the latest version of Windows it is likely to be quickly updated by them. But if Microsoft have deliberately replaced an OEM driver with no notification to the user they have done so, never mind why, they often have seriously reduced functionality.
A reduction one only discovers when needing to use the removed function, often causing a loss of considerable time diagnosing the problem oneself. Bearing in mind that Device Manager will report the drivers as up to date and the device working normally.
This can be disastrous if something is an urgent job.
If MS did list any such changes at the end of their update, as least any such problems could be fixed at leisure.

-- put up with it or use a different OS . Not an option for me and it's not that I like to moan but I do find it irritating that it keeps on happening (irrespective of where the fault lies).

FWIW the drivers for my ZxR were rudely replaced by Windows Update a few days ago too (from what I can see). Didn't actually notice till I had to switch to headphones.
I guess Creative messed up a few drivers when they published to Windows Update.
